Pica?

Maybe they need to retire the Sockness Monster.

Thankfully I’ve never had a dog that chewed on inappropriate things. But in the veterinary profession, we do see some strange items in doggy GI tracts!

I’d think edible underwear would be easier to find.

Wouldn’t that train the dog to eat all socks? They don’t know the difference between edible and non-edible socks.

But does it chew the sock because of pica or because it sees the “sockness monster” as a threat to the children.

My current dog sometimes eats pieces of plastic bags. It seems like he does it when constipated; I think his previous owner didn’t take him outside much (if at all), so he never learned to eat grass. It does seem to help him “go.” Glad to say he hasn’t done it in quite a while!

But Mortimer doesn’t eat the socks. He just chews them to shreds.

Mortimer appears to be one of those dogs who don’t see going to the vet as “visiting the enemy.”

Mmm, fruit leather…

So just give him the mailman’s socks….

One of my cats has pica. His main targets are plastic and paper. Our mail and shopping bags are prime targets.

All dogs have pica, by that definition. So do toddlers.
