I remembered this punchline from 47 years ago; some things are so good they just stick with you.

Will this help Peppermint Patty understand irony? Doubtful.

This was such an elaborate setup for “I found them in the wastebasket.” I was thinking they’d been stolen. I thought Marcie the likeliest culprit (Franklin didn’t appear in this arc, and having some random extra we’d never seen before as the guilty party would be pretty weak writing). I thought she’d stolen them so she could give some to Pep to make her feel better.

I guess this works too. Elaborate build-ups for underwhelming punch lines have a charm of their own.
