The phrase “I don’t like the cut of his jib” is an idiom that means someone disapproves of another person’s appearance or demeanor. It can also suggest a feeling of distrust or dislike based on a first impression. The term originated in the sailing navies of the mid-18th century. At that time, the shape of a ship’s jib sail could accurately determine its nationality, and therefore whether it was hostile or friendly.

Once went to the doctor. Seemed to be having recurrence of a hernia I’d had repaired several years earlier. As the doctor started his examination of “the area” he exclaimed “ooh, nice scar!”.

I often say, “l like the cut of your jib!”, if someone suggests a pint.

It’s often followed by a baffled expression.

Backgrounder are always appreciated.

But its the only jib I got!

At least it’s not a wide berth.

No matter how you cut it….there’s still gonna be a stitched up scar….

I’d prefer the cut of a good Key Lime pie.

If that doesn’t “jib” with you, do what I do and see how the mainsail sets.
