Choosing looks over comfort and safety seems the height of insanity to me. (I think so every time the temp is in the 20s and someone walks by in yoga pants and flip-flops)
Wearing a hat is not a problem for me. I was ecstatic when I left the Navy, knowing I didn’t have to get another “high and tight” for the rest of my life, and let my hair grow long. The catch: while my “flowing tresses” reach down to my shoulders, my receding hairline is has actually RETREATED to the backside of my head!! So… I can put on a hat and my hair doesn’t even KNOW it!!
For most of my life (okay, until I went through “the change”) I was always warm to hot. Husband would get upset with me when out mid winter in freezing cold weather with no jacket on – or jacket open.
Then I became a cliche. I went through “the change” and now I am almost always freezing. I found out the hard way – that if one is cold and it is 70F outside, putting on a winter jacket and gloves does not make one warmer – it makes one ill! (That was a big argument with husband before he let me go ahead and do this – for once he was right.) Sometimes I forget and run outside in winter for something from the car or such without a coat and BRRRRR!! I have taken to sleeping in an old, ripped pair of jeans, ditto tee shirt, heavy loose socks and sometimes add a sweatshirt or winter nightgown over it all. Sometimes even light gloves also.

What choice? Up North, on a day like today, you’d have to be crazy to go out for long without a hat or hood.

As long as you’re warm, it shouldn’t matter what your hair’s like.
