I used to come in early to avoid the worst of the commuter traffic. But I don’t drink coffee, so when I came in I went straight to work without even thinking about the coffee machine. Others would drag in later, then complain because I hadn’t made coffee for them. I would have done it if they’d asked nicely, but they were snide and then tried to get my boss to assign it as one of my duties. This stink escalated until it reached the Director, who already thought that people wasted too much time standing around drinking coffee, so he axed the coffee machine. Of course the coffee drinkers blamed it all on me…
I worked night shift. Day shift partied like maniacs. One of them had to come in early to get the printouts ready for day shift. She usually made coffee and sat, sleepless and hungover until the coffee was ready. I started making the first pot and even had to intermittently go to the 24 hour grocery if they forgot they had run out. She got to come in later to a ready pot of coffee and start work. I got a new job. Things went to hell for a couple of weeks until they realized I wasn’t making that first pot of coffee. The manager told night shift that they had to find time to make that first pot of coffee even if something else had to wait.

That’s right! Coffee first, then worm… or maybe a breakfast burrito! But definitely coffee first!
