I don’t recall cardboard submarines. I do remember the plastic ones which came as cereal prizes and were propelled by baking soda. Kelloggs also issued baking soda powered US Navy frogmen.
Cardboard submarine. Oh come on Red, I got a real plastic diving submarine from the back of a cereal box, in fact I still have it. You took the top of the conning tower off, put in some baking soda, put the top back on and put it in the bathtub when you took a bath. It would dive and surface all on its own.
Hi Red and Rover folks – I think this was one of my brother “gimmickgenius” followed and commented on. I know he always loved the “Uncle Jimmy” strips for Memorial Day. My brother – real name Jim – was named after our own Uncle Jimmy, who never made it home from WWII.
Well, Jim died unexpectedly last week, and his funeral was yesterday. He was only 65. I have to believe he’s had a great meeting with his namesake! If anyone knows what other comics gimmickgenius commented on, please pass the word. Thanks!

A cardboard submarine is so fake- unlike the spy decoder ring I sent away for.
