I had pretty big lists of things to do in each of my first two retirements. Unfortunately, I ran out of things to do much quicker than I expected and went back to work out of shear boredom. Now in my third retirement I learned how to actually relax and just go with the flow as they say. Daytrip to the city or take the boat down to Myrtle Beach? I absolutely have time for that. Iāve finally learned I donāt have to constantly be doing something. When old friends ask how I finally slowed down I just show them a comic strip I cut out of Calvin & Hobbes sitting under a tree on a warm summer day. Comics can definitely improve our lives.
I was a little concerned about what Iād do to occupy my time once I retired. But I quickly found that I almost always end up doing lots of things that wile away the hours and I never get bored.
Think of something you already like to to, but wish you had time to do more of. Does Betty ever travel now (with or without Bub)? If traveling isnāt important enough to make time for when youāre young(ish), donāt expect to find it particularly compelling when youāre older. (Thereās also a possibility that youāll love it, and regret having waited so long to start.)
Try new things NOW. (Carpe diem.) If you donāt like something, move on. If you like it, then you can look forward to doing more of it when you have more free time.
I can think of lots of things to do, but travel (by airplane) is not one of them. I am not afraid of flying, but I do like to avoid inconvenience and viruses. I am not a herd animal.
When we retired my wife and I started out by going surf fishing and beachcombing almost every day but really hit our stride when our friends talked us into going on a Mediterranean cruise with them. Bub and Betty will need someone like that to nudge them off top-dead-center.

we take epic summer road trips in our Motorhome, and there is a substantial amount of winging it involved.
