Worst kind of bath. Happened to me one winter night. I was getting home from a hockey game, hockey bag and stick still in my hands and fumbling with the keys. When I finally got the door open, the dog bolted. By the time I dropped my stuff to go after him, he was already running back yelping and stinking of skunk. That was a long night.
I thought I was sneaking up on an armadillo one night, but it turned out to be a skunk. Quickly backed up and ran, but he just ignored me. They’re actually pretty calm animals.
That is a reason why zebras are native to tropical Africa. Because in a blowing winter snow storm, you can only see half of the running animal coming straight towards you or your car!
Never had occasion to try it but I’ve read where a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide will neutralize the odor. Has something to do with chemistry. I mostly slept through that required course.
We have a resident skunk where we live. It makes its rounds and we detect it about once every two weeks. I saw it this morning as I was backing my car out of the driveway. I wish it slept through the winter. Early AM seems to be it’s favorite time of day.
I worry every evening when Remi goes out umpteen times that she’s going to come across a skunk. The one and only time that happened she was let in the deck door and wandered through the family room before we realized she had been sprayed! I can’t even begin to tell you how awful it was.
My first thought was “poor Louie”, getting skunked in the night and middle of a snowstorm, but he does look happy having that warm bath. Now, to get him dry and rid him of the “wet dog” aroma!
Saw a skunk in -10 degree weather once. We were in a backpacker’s cabin (4 walls and a wood burning stove) on top of a mountain, and the skunk came inside to get warm. We decided that it was better to face the cold, and left the skunk in charge of the cabin.
The San Diego Zoo has night zoo during summer, and many of the paths aren’t very well lit. My wife and I were exploring one of the less well lit areas and saw something dart in front of us. As we proceeded, we saw a skunk, getting ready to spray. Fortunately we were able to back off before anything bad happened.

A wide awake skunk on a pirate ship out at sea in the middle of Winter. Henry has worse luck than The Ancient Mariner, but Louie looks happy.

A heavy hit in close quarters can be a serious health issue.

Get that wet Lab inside drying out by the warm fire quickly! That perfume is MUCH more “scented” than skunk spray…
Good morning crew!

Well, that stinks. Better luck next time avoiding the skunk, Louie.
