The Alps are made up of rock from north Africa. Scientists have theorized that convection currents within the Earth pushed Africa to slide on up over Europe, and then retreat after a while, leaving a mountain region and a rift valley which became the Mediterranean. An alternative would be a massive polar ice mass, which depressed Europe, and then melted, to allow Europe to rise again.
That alternative is not a mature theory, however. There is a lot invested in the convection theory, including the source of our geomatic field.

They began as a single puddle by a St. Bernard, with a cask around its neck, in the (very) magic forest. Hey, mythical legends can begin anywhere.
