These days, I prefer a gas fireplace. In my last house (up north), there were actually burn marks in my wood floor near the hearth (courtesy of the previous owner). Gas also eliminates bringing in wood from outdoors where spiders lurk, the poking to keep it going, the ashes that must be swept out (who am I, Cinderella?), the chimney cleaning and flue issues. Yes, yes, yes, I DO know the real thing is better, but I’m too old to want to bother with all that goes with it.

Its the tinkering that is relaxing, if there is only a fire available you use it.

Friends had a fire pit at their home in cottage country and “the lady of the house” would, on occasion, invite us up to sit around the flames. She maintained a firm grip on the poker, claiming only she had the right to poke the fire. That was OK with me, as it would have taken time away from my beer.

“The only thing I know how to build out of wood is a fire” pretty much describes me.

When we moved to Rochester 44 years ago we insisted on a house with a wood-burning fireplace. We go through a face cord in about 1.5 winters. We have a Texas Fireframe; their increased heat transfer claim is IMO semi-bogus, but it does make it easier to maintain a fire with less poking.
