It was really only in the 60s that Charlie Brown was unloved. In the early 50s, Patty and Violet loved him (and then, by 1958, Violet despised him and Patty was sort of indifferent towards him). After 1970, Charlie Brown was loved by Peppermint Patty, Marcie, Peggy Jean and Emily.
Yeah, he loves you. Like the feeling he would get cutting off his arm, stopping the bleeding with a blow torch, and soaking the stump in extra salty ghost pepper sauce
It’s times like this I’m quite endeared to Peppermint Patty’s character. She’s scrappy and inconsiderate, but she has a tender heart and an unfortunate back story that helps make her who she is.
“Do you love me, Chuck?”
It’s an awkward question that shows a moment of vulnerability that I suspect for the sake of her emotional well-being will soon be cloaked back within her tough demeanor when Charlie Brown doesn’t reciprocate.

Yeah, Marcie is pretty sharp. I feel sorry for Patty – she’s asked the question you should never ask.

Didn’t Charlie Brown have a girlfriend at one point?

And that’s why I never liked Peppermint Patty as possible Chuck’s love interest, despite she’s the one having the feelings, she expect Chuck has them.
