Full service gas - really dates this.

I know it’s Canada…but in the US both Oregon and New Jersey mandate that all stations are full service…

In Oregon it is “mini serve” which means they only pump your gas (you have to get out and pay for it) In New Jersey its still more of a mini serve, but they take your payment, and they all seem to wear white shirts and red bowties! Classy!!

In NJ… white shirts and red bowties? You’re kidding, right? There is no standard - except “no standard”. (Jersey Girls don’t pump gas!)

Good to hear full service is coming back at least in some places. She’d get almost two litres here in London Ontario, gas is about 94 cents a litre.

As for why it only runs out when she’s got it, I guess this is another slam on John’s insensitivity, a good husband would keep the tank full, and why does she only have a buck and 80 cents anyway?

My brain played a trick on me. I initially read the punchline with the final “it” referring to “gas” not “car.” (i.e., “Why does this thing only run out of gas when I’ve got gas.”) I couldn’t figure out why her having gas made a difference.

I agree her last sentence is confusing; it would have better to put “I’ve” in caps or something.

When I was in England several years ago, I noticed the pump prices looked the same as they did here. Then I realized it was pounds per liter instead of dollars per gallon. Yikes.

I prefer self service.

During the days of full service the attendant would raise the hood and try to sell you an extra quart of oil, fan belts, oil change and other stuff you didn’t need. They had some crafty ones out there.

I’m a born ‘do it your selfer’ anyway.

Seed-drill, I am curious to ask you how much cost for pounds per liter (dollar per gallon in US) when you fill the gas up and pay for a gas? Yesterday I stopped by the gas station that had $2.69 on sign outside but the gas pump machine showed the digital number was $2.75 and when I finished filling the gas up and the cost was $35.00. I wished I could tell the person who operates the convenience store about different price per gallon but I had no time to do it so I left while there are too many people to stop by for filling the gas up.

When I was in England more than 10 years ago, the cost of gas was almost $6.00 per gallon. I don’t think I want to know what it is now.

I also remember driving into Oregon and stopping to gas up the ol’ motor home. I got out and opened the filler cap and started to reach for the pump handle and the attendant (who had been sitting on his butt in the office) came screaming out yelling that I wasn’t allowed to touch the pump. He said that he could have lost his job if he let me pump my own gas. I told him that was ok, I’d just as soon have someone else do it anyway. It gave me a chance to clean the windshield (which he did NOT offer to do). That gas-sucker holds 75 gallons and we had waited to get across the state line because it was about 60 cents cheaper per gallon in Oregon than California. We were running on fumes.

I was about to say something similar to your what you said, FishStix. Good thing I live in Washington; just between British Columbia and Oregon. Good ol’ self service at the gas station.

I live in NJ, and I have NEVER seen a red bowtie at a gas station. A red turban perhaps - but never a bowtie!

She has no money because she just spend it all on groceries! John should really make sure he fills up the gas tank when he’s done with the car….How inconsiderate!

@Wildmustang1262, you should not have filled the tank at that gas station - they’re cheating everyone who doesn’t notice the extra 6 cents per litre. Maybe complain to the police? or some consumers’ organization?

@comixavier, for sure $1.80 Canadian is way less than $1.80 US (alas).

I didn’t notice Elly’s bill, it is a dollar bill and looks American. In Canada we don’t have dollar bills, we have looney’s which is a one dollar coin and twoneys which is a two dollar coin. I’m not sure when they did away with dollar bills since I’ve only been here since last November.

Hey on FBorFW Candace Halloran’s full whose who is up. For those that don’t remember she was Elizabeth’s sometimes friend/ sometimes enemy is her teenage years. They became close friends in college when they shared a dorm.

$1.80 FOR REGULAR GAS?! All I can say is…money has been through a LOT in the past twenty years.

We used to have dollar bills, as well as two dollar bills. That is part of what shows how old this strip is.
