Professor Noll promised this to Tess and her friends. Angelorius came bursting in the Tracy’s front door telling them she was going to make them rich, and now she’s taking it away from them?
Where is the Hazmat team? Where is the bomb squad? Where are the police officers that should be securing the scene? Where is the fire crew that should still be on scene? Where is Dr. Noll and why was he allowed to enter a potentially explosive area where he could possibly disturb evidence? Why did Dick leave the scene to begin with? Why is that woman(?) wearing Kabuki makeup? If perfume explodes in the neighborhood does Tracy hear it? Do my questions upset anyone? Do I care?
Why hasn’t Angelorius been arrested? She just wandered in and made get-rich-quick noises since she entered, and only the fact that Tess is eating up the Make Money Fast stuff might save her from trespassing charges at the least.
Yes, Anthraxglorious, this is big! Would you really store this explosive perfume IN YOUR HOUSE while trying to sell it? Taking it away from the neighborhood housewife sales brigade may, in a perverse sort of way, be the first right decision made here. This stuff should be stored in special blast-proof bunkers.
As a gender-confused Joker insults our intelligence by pointing out the direction we should be reding the strip in, Joker ALSO goes from incompetant businesswoman to flat out evil in just two panels. At the same time, Dick manages to leave his home and return to do the job he, CSI, HAZMAT, and the Bomb Squad should have done in the first place, investigating the explosion at the house… In the span of 2 seconds. But there’s no police tape telling people to stay out, the lights are on inside the house, the door is open, and despite being the middle of winter, the trees still have all their leaves. Except the ones that cease to exist in the space between Dick and the house.
“Speaking of stuff”? How did Tracy hear what Jokerette was saying?
Is Tracy really Clark Kent?
As to the lack of a haz-mat team, don’t forget that the air is still full of the scent of Dick, and we know that has unpredictible effects on everyone… even Dick himself.
I was thinking that maybe to get DT back on track, they should do what they did with Annie by restarting everything from the beginning and have a separate writer and artist. Too bad Jay Maeder didn’t get to write Tracy.
I miss Max Collins.
A Dick Tracy comic book series might also be a way of getting new readers (DC or Marvel).
Angelorious was so excited she was able to extend her left arm out further than the usual laws of comic cosmos allowed.
“This is what you’ve been waiting for girl, the chance to hit the big time. The chance to be more than a sideshow freak with whirly arms and a pointy head”, she reminded herself.
She knew that the storyline called for her to help Tess and her stupid friends create a successful perfume business after a near disaster with the insane Dr. Noll.
“That’s what they think”, she spat out.
Breaking with proper protocol and risking being written completely out of the story, Angelorious turned to face Dick Locher and spoke directly to him.
“Never! This is BIG-time stuff”!
All of what Dick Locher experienced in his long time illustrious career never prepared him for that! Startled, he quickly threw Dick Tracy into the story, having him state for the hundredth time his curiosity about the exploding perfume.
Tracy was a good company man, always was. He knew his talents were being wasted in dumb and silly storylines the past few years, but so what! No one could ever say the Dick Tracy wasn’t loyal! Dick always did his job! Risking exposing that he heard what the mutinous Angelorious just said, something that normally would be impossible considering she was indoors and he was outdoors, Dick spoke to both her and the reading audience.
“Speaking of stuff, I’m still curious why the perfume explodes”.
I’ve come to the conclusion that Dick Lochwer, never in a hurry, takes THREE panels to incrimentally take his story where most other Authors would be at in ONE panel with the aid a text box. Getting to the POINT is not his thing!
His style reminds me of the Sci-Fi movie “The Day the Earth Stood Still”.
Then, that fawning exercise in the first post has inadevtently thrown up the right name for the perfume – “LOVE SIC”. Another example of how the unintended produces the right answer. No wonder brief visits are allowed once every 6 months or so, to look at the studio and soak up “superb” vibes from a living Genious’ work station.
That’s why never tickle DL’s funny bone, something wiil come at you Pavlov style, and as you may have noticed (like LiamC) it can leave epistle Loo-ng bites on the board.
Of a more serious nature is the glacial movement of the tale. At 30 hours short of 7 weeks, readers have been milling around like the characters in the strip, very concious of the fact that nothing of consequence is happening for yet another day. Meaningful progress in Dick Tracy “stood still”!
Here is an Artist who can convey the “illusion” of movement by having someone point through the side-line of a panel and then by Friday you start to realize, NOTHING has really happenned. He has been ‘whistleing’ the same tune now for his readers for 7 weeks. NO crime, NO villain, NO suspense,(unless you define it as waiting weeks for something to ‘happen’ (?) There is NO substance and really NOTHING to peak your interest!

I’ve come to the conclusion that Dick Locher wants a life, and that if you draw sloppy and only advance the plot one frame per week, you can knock off a week’s worth of panels in a half hour and go out to dinner every night.
Interim report on case # 325980-45- Dr. Matthew H. Noll
On 12-18-08, I contacted Diet Smith of Diet Smith Industries to ascertain the whereabouts of one Dr. Matthew H. Noll, who is considered to be a “menace to society“. During the course of the next several days, I was able to discover that Diet Smith does not “keep track of ex-employees“. As I stated in an earlier phone conversation with my supervisor concerning Dr. Noll, “his last venture led to a massive explosion with injuries”. In a follow up conversation that took place on 01-02-09 I informed “Chief” Liam that “he’s out of control”, “he makes things explode”. As of this date, “we only have one small lead to his whereabouts“, “he previously worked for Diet Smith Industries“, in what capacity we do not know. “My plan is to document all explosions in the U.S., the let the computer look for a pattern and sniff out the professors hideout“.” My computer will locate the bomber”.

bassmanbob, I’m glad Liam didn’t “act” on your suggestion to throw you (and Matt) off the board. Today’s chapter was another classic. I liked the “inovation” of the interaction between Angelorious and Dick Locher. It’s the sort of welcome change or “surprise” that does not occur in the Dick Tracy strip anymore.
Speaking of Matt I’ve learned to tolorate his worship of Locher’s artistic human presentations. But the lad still worries me, and I have to be concerNed about the sort of interaction he has had with the opposite sex when he can find that nipple on the upper left hand side of a breast, and pointing in the wrong direction is normal (?) But then anyone who can call female posters here “wags”, tries to sell hair shirts and red sweaters in aisle 5 and fantacises about wife beatings must realy have a pernicious case of “insomia”
And yes, I know every one wishes he would shut up and go to sleep.
Now back to your “book”. Can I make a guess that in an upcoming chapter you’ll have Dr. Noll kidnap Angelorious and hold her captive as a Genie in a bottle(?)

I like today’s strip. Speaking of mind reading, DT has deduced that it was perfume that blew up, as when we last heard he was pondering why it smelled like perfume. I like how most of the action takes place outside of the strip, like Infinite Jest with less footnotes. There must have been many unused panels we are not being shown; these will be collectors items.
It been several days since the explosion and Angelodorous is scheming against Tess (in the next room) from her new headquarters in Jrs old room, with Dr Noll, with whom she shares Jr’s old bunkbed. She shares the bunkbed. Dr Noll agrees, holding with outstretched arms, two test tubes, next to her with one eye open. It will be shown again Weds and Thurs to remind us how dangerous he is. Tess wanted him to feel at home, but did have trepidation at Dr Noll bringing his chemistry set with him. Conflict!
Mini-cliffhanger indeed! What could have caused the explosion? It could not be because the mad scientist was not titratring his liquids as most chemists do, nor was he using a chemical hood. This is very dangerous and DT should be careful entering the rickety house. Too bad Traz-E could not perform this function for him. Irony!
We will learn much more about Angelodorous over the years it takes to complete this story. There is so much happening off-strip it makes the actual strip inconsequential. If only we knew!
I do not intend to mock the strip but I do resent The Editors who refuse to do anything to improve the current strips limitations that force all the action to implied.
Matt, As someone who is waiting for “SOMETHING” to happen your list of events is staggeringly small.
The first one happened “off camera” and why does it take a whole WEEK for every “pinch” of progress to materialize? Half of Cosgrove’s appearances is time wasting!
I’m almost tempted to take Locher’s strips, cut them up, and reasemble them with a few word changes. Showing how easy it would have been to have arrived at the very same point some THREE weeks ago. Try it, and learn a useful NEW skill!

Matty ole boy, do you hop up and down and clap your little hands together when you think of these cute little things to say? Let me explain one thing to you, listen closely now. We all learned to love DT when we were kids. When it was fun. Very few kids alive today would give it a second glance. NOT because the kids don’t understand or care but because DT, as it is written and drawn today, is boring, poorly plotted and poorly drawn. It is nothing compared to the DT of yesterday. We are all locked in our common disappointment with the strip. And you just don’t get it. When we’re gone there will no one left to care about the Dick Tracy that used to stand up for all those things that you claim to care about. You know what fellah? If Dick Tracy were a real live person he’d completely ignore your sad little self. Go ahead and flag that, buddy boy.
And–once again–we have “fans” of the strip here degrading it, devaluing it, mocking it, and basically treating it with ZERO respect.
All I can imagine is that you must all be ashamed to read comics at your age and that you are embarrassed by it, so you feel the need to mock and make fun of and degrade it to make yourselves feel better.
That is a sad, sad, lonely existence.

I enjoyed the Pigborn link immensely. The art IS stunningly beautiful. I’ve long been a believer that the internet is the future of this business and I’m glad to see a creator who is using the medium to expand the horizons. Thanks for sharing!

Jeff, I’m glad you liked it. Did you see his sketch? It follows the main cartoon.
I didn’t check out the sketch earlier, but how he went from THAT to the final product, regardless of his employing technology to accomplish it, was impressive.
You know I’m old-fashioned when it comes to the original art – I like using the quill pen and brush with India ink and color using watercolors, but I’m wholly impressed with the results of his work. I think traditionalists biggest fear is that cartooning will devolve away from the old tools of the trade and move more towards employing technology to accomplish the result. Despite this healthy debate, I’m glad there are creator’s showing us all how effectively the internet can be used to break the boundaries we’ve been encountering in the PRINT medium for far too long.
I didn’t check out the sketch earlier, but how he went from THAT to the final product, regardless of his employing technology to accomplish it, was impressive.
Two of his fans will be meeting with him at a Con in New York, next month, I believe. They will be asking about how he goes from the sketches to the finished panels. It will make for interesting reading. If you’d like, I’ll let you know when the information appears.

Perhaps I should have been clearer in my post – the hospital is a client of the firm I contract with, not a client of mine. Regardless, I’m hoping I can find time to attend the Con.
As much as I truly love Chicago, the town I’ve called home now for, gosh, I guess I’ve lived here for almost 13 years now, I do enjoy the frequent visits I make to NYC. I always use my work visits for some recreation or research.
It is well worth the trip, Matt. You won’t be disappointed. My biggest struggle during my visits is deciding what NOT to go and see. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the most impressive collections I have ever encountered in my life. I highly recommend it!
Plus, NY City has some of the coolest comic book stores I’ve ever visited. Many of them take a much broader view in what falls within this category and their offerings are definitive. Even Graham Cracker Comics would be given a run for their money!
Matthew, I don’t mind at all you using my comments. You ask a fair question. The strip almost seemed 3-D to me. When I first viewed it I almost felt like I was flying! Regardless how it was achieved I think it’s wonderful.
Let me see if I can describe to you why I think today’s ‘Pibgorn’ is beautiful. I love the three irregular panels, each with it’s separate dominant color. Each panel can be taken and enjoyed as a work all on its own, similar to a triptych. The first panel, whith the background of the sky, echos the shape of Dru’s arms as she soars upward. The second panel, showing the volcano down below, follows the shape of that volcano, with beautiful coloring, and the wonderful, almost three dimensional, effect of Dru soaring towards it. The third panel follows the shape of the volcanic eruption, and the orange coloring stands out here. I know the background story which makes it meaningful to me, yet I think that anyone just looking at today’s panel could enjoy it for the beauty of the artwork alone.
Matthew, if and when you ever visit NY I’d be more than willing to act as your tour guide. I’ve lived here all my life so I know a thing or two about the city.
I’m guessing Brooke employed a Photoshop filter to gain this 3-D effect you describe, BMB, and it is very effective when considering the actual scene he is depicting.

I think you’re spot on with the “school” Brooke comes from, which ordinarily isn’t MY cuppa tea, but as a comic strip, I’m just real glad to see folks breaking the traditional postage-stamp panel layout and he’s blowing my mind with it in the process!
I have collected a lot of Sunday pages by Feininger and some McCay and Gas Alley pages over the year’s and my favorite pages are those where the creator takes the reader out of the traditional space and widen’s his perspective within the construct of the larger work. It’s exciting for me to encounter someone with the guts to break the traditional composition rules and expand the form. I’m now a Pigborn fan, I guess. He’s definitely got my attention!

Dypak, well put. You speak for a large MAJORITY of the 23 million people they say still read the strip.
What you have said moves the Praetorian Guard to say “you are disrespecting the Author and the Strip, you are, incorrect! How do you know”? Then fairly rapidly they regroup, to their BACK STOP position … “it’s NOT LOCHER, … too many tight restrictions, it’s NOT his fault, It’s the fault of the TMS EDITORS !
Okay, now that everyone is hugging each other and singing “Feelings” may I humbly offer a suggestion to improve today’s offering?
If I were DL’s editor, I would suggest he replace Angelorious’s (Yes, I know. Thank you, spell checker) word balloons with thought balloons. At least that way, when she steps up to the plate as designated villain, everyone in earshot does not hear her. And remove Tracy’s word balloon altogether and replace it with a caption overhead reading something like “Meanwhile Tracy is about to enter Dr. Noll’s house to find out the secret of Love Fire”.

With my awakening this morning to Pigborn, I guess I have some further exploration learning what MORE is out there. I’ve been enjoying the new Rip Haywire strip over at Universal Press’s website and it’s kind of like a somewhat campy throwback or homage to Caniff, which is kind of cool. The creator is pretty talented and given his story, kind of an unlikely person to be producing a comic strip, but he’s doing a fine job and having fun.

Simple! My sources to the claim are as accurate as yours. What do yours tell you on the subject?
Second, “STATISTICS” support mine, they speak volumes. The current producers (MK&L and now L) have lost 86% of the papers they were fortunate to start with 12 years ago. Readership polls consistently rated the strip poorly (see Jeffery Lindenblat’s newspaper polls published in the DT Magazine over the past several years. The Editors tend to respond to the readers wishes.
Reality does not come from what a few individuals “wish” for, but rather what vast majorities tell their newspaper Feature Editors they LIKE and WHAT does NOT impress them. Unfortunatly, THEY TOO, do not give the “respect”, “high esteem” and “adulation” you wish for Locher’s Dick Tracy work.

I remember ‘Love is’ from the 70s. I think it’s fairly new to the go comics site. I never cared for for it back in the 70s, and still don’t now. It had a handful of loyal fans when it first showed up here, but I don’t know what’s happened to it since then.
Sydney, Love Is just started on our site last month, and though a handful of readers are loyally tagging the strip every day, few have commented on it. Odd - you would think a strip whose characters do everything in the buff would have people talking…

No, comparing Angelorious to a Kabuki player on meth is disrespectful. Pointing out that today’s panel 2 is yesterday’s panel 3 with different characters is a fact. And no one has yet answered how Tracy can possible hear Angelorious from next door. Or down the street.

LiamC, I inteded to, but forgot to say, it’s good to have your occasional comment and of course your sready hand as some of us do get a little emotional at times on our favorite strip.
A week ago I looked forward to reading DT and the witty commentary below since the story lines I’ve been reading since coming upon this site are preposterous. Now thanks to some commentatro named Liam decided to tut-tut other commentators for pointing out the obvious snail-pace of the arc and other commentators expectation that we should never be critical of the cartoonist who writes for public consumption.
Pardon me for seeming pedantic, but Liam’s tut-tutting has turned this board into a long pedantic rant!

I tried to follow this strip before I found gocomics. I loved the artwork, just could not figure out a plot or story line and gave up on it. I don’t think I can handle two 100+ comment sections though :-)
Very entertaining posts today as usual. It is nice to see that everyone is in a happier mood today.
I like how in Panel #3, Dick Tracy is outside while everyone else is inside. It shows how he is an outsider to Tess’ grand perfume scheme and how he feels alone in his marriage sometimes, don’t you think? Anyway, that was artsy and I like it. I’m going to go eat a sandwich now.

Jeff, come off that Noll had NO “discetion” in the matter! Locher drew it that way. Another goof which slipped by the Editors certain people want to blame for all the “problems”. Now here is guidance to another .. See 1-24-09 Window and Antique car below. Then see 1-27-09 Window, NO car. Dissapeared! Not careful enough to “remember” what he drew 3 days earlier! Can’t “hide” by saying the Editors should have spotted it. I’d think that they would not be expecing a Senior practitioner to make so many “101 Art” flubs! Everyone will make mistakes, it’s the numbing “frequency”, that casts a dark shadow over the quality of his work.

Where is the Hazmat team? Where is the bomb squad? Where are the police officers that should be securing the scene? Where is the fire crew that should still be on scene? Where is Dr. Noll and why was he allowed to enter a potentially explosive area where he could possibly disturb evidence? Why did Dick leave the scene to begin with? Why is that woman(?) wearing Kabuki makeup? If perfume explodes in the neighborhood does Tracy hear it? Do my questions upset anyone? Do I care?

Why hasn’t Angelorius been arrested? She just wandered in and made get-rich-quick noises since she entered, and only the fact that Tess is eating up the Make Money Fast stuff might save her from trespassing charges at the least.
Yes, Anthraxglorious, this is big! Would you really store this explosive perfume IN YOUR HOUSE while trying to sell it? Taking it away from the neighborhood housewife sales brigade may, in a perverse sort of way, be the first right decision made here. This stuff should be stored in special blast-proof bunkers.

As a gender-confused Joker insults our intelligence by pointing out the direction we should be reding the strip in, Joker ALSO goes from incompetant businesswoman to flat out evil in just two panels. At the same time, Dick manages to leave his home and return to do the job he, CSI, HAZMAT, and the Bomb Squad should have done in the first place, investigating the explosion at the house… In the span of 2 seconds. But there’s no police tape telling people to stay out, the lights are on inside the house, the door is open, and despite being the middle of winter, the trees still have all their leaves. Except the ones that cease to exist in the space between Dick and the house.
Incompetant. Utterly incompetant.

I was thinking that maybe to get DT back on track, they should do what they did with Annie by restarting everything from the beginning and have a separate writer and artist. Too bad Jay Maeder didn’t get to write Tracy. I miss Max Collins.
A Dick Tracy comic book series might also be a way of getting new readers (DC or Marvel).

Angelorious was so excited she was able to extend her left arm out further than the usual laws of comic cosmos allowed. “This is what you’ve been waiting for girl, the chance to hit the big time. The chance to be more than a sideshow freak with whirly arms and a pointy head”, she reminded herself. She knew that the storyline called for her to help Tess and her stupid friends create a successful perfume business after a near disaster with the insane Dr. Noll. “That’s what they think”, she spat out. Breaking with proper protocol and risking being written completely out of the story, Angelorious turned to face Dick Locher and spoke directly to him. “Never! This is BIG-time stuff”! All of what Dick Locher experienced in his long time illustrious career never prepared him for that! Startled, he quickly threw Dick Tracy into the story, having him state for the hundredth time his curiosity about the exploding perfume. Tracy was a good company man, always was. He knew his talents were being wasted in dumb and silly storylines the past few years, but so what! No one could ever say the Dick Tracy wasn’t loyal! Dick always did his job! Risking exposing that he heard what the mutinous Angelorious just said, something that normally would be impossible considering she was indoors and he was outdoors, Dick spoke to both her and the reading audience.

I’ve come to the conclusion that Dick Lochwer, never in a hurry, takes THREE panels to incrimentally take his story where most other Authors would be at in ONE panel with the aid a text box. Getting to the POINT is not his thing! His style reminds me of the Sci-Fi movie “The Day the Earth Stood Still”. Then, that fawning exercise in the first post has inadevtently thrown up the right name for the perfume – “LOVE SIC”. Another example of how the unintended produces the right answer. No wonder brief visits are allowed once every 6 months or so, to look at the studio and soak up “superb” vibes from a living Genious’ work station. That’s why never tickle DL’s funny bone, something wiil come at you Pavlov style, and as you may have noticed (like LiamC) it can leave epistle Loo-ng bites on the board.
Of a more serious nature is the glacial movement of the tale. At 30 hours short of 7 weeks, readers have been milling around like the characters in the strip, very concious of the fact that nothing of consequence is happening for yet another day. Meaningful progress in Dick Tracy “stood still”! Here is an Artist who can convey the “illusion” of movement by having someone point through the side-line of a panel and then by Friday you start to realize, NOTHING has really happenned. He has been ‘whistleing’ the same tune now for his readers for 7 weeks. NO crime, NO villain, NO suspense,(unless you define it as waiting weeks for something to ‘happen’ (?) There is NO substance and really NOTHING to peak your interest!

On 12-18-08, I contacted Diet Smith of Diet Smith Industries to ascertain the whereabouts of one Dr. Matthew H. Noll, who is considered to be a “menace to society“. During the course of the next several days, I was able to discover that Diet Smith does not “keep track of ex-employees“. As I stated in an earlier phone conversation with my supervisor concerning Dr. Noll, “his last venture led to a massive explosion with injuries”. In a follow up conversation that took place on 01-02-09 I informed “Chief” Liam that “he’s out of control”, “he makes things explode”. As of this date, “we only have one small lead to his whereabouts“, “he previously worked for Diet Smith Industries“, in what capacity we do not know. “My plan is to document all explosions in the U.S., the let the computer look for a pattern and sniff out the professors hideout“.” My computer will locate the bomber”. bassmanbob, I’m glad Liam didn’t “act” on your suggestion to throw you (and Matt) off the board. Today’s chapter was another classic. I liked the “inovation” of the interaction between Angelorious and Dick Locher. It’s the sort of welcome change or “surprise” that does not occur in the Dick Tracy strip anymore. Speaking of Matt I’ve learned to tolorate his worship of Locher’s artistic human presentations. But the lad still worries me, and I have to be concerNed about the sort of interaction he has had with the opposite sex when he can find that nipple on the upper left hand side of a breast, and pointing in the wrong direction is normal (?) But then anyone who can call female posters here “wags”, tries to sell hair shirts and red sweaters in aisle 5 and fantacises about wife beatings must realy have a pernicious case of “insomia” And yes, I know every one wishes he would shut up and go to sleep.
Now back to your “book”. Can I make a guess that in an upcoming chapter you’ll have Dr. Noll kidnap Angelorious and hold her captive as a Genie in a bottle(?) Just as ‘possible’ as those Robots with WHEELS that easily negotiated steps and doors ‘half’ their height

I like today’s strip. Speaking of mind reading, DT has deduced that it was perfume that blew up, as when we last heard he was pondering why it smelled like perfume. I like how most of the action takes place outside of the strip, like Infinite Jest with less footnotes. There must have been many unused panels we are not being shown; these will be collectors items.
It been several days since the explosion and Angelodorous is scheming against Tess (in the next room) from her new headquarters in Jrs old room, with Dr Noll, with whom she shares Jr’s old bunkbed. She shares the bunkbed. Dr Noll agrees, holding with outstretched arms, two test tubes, next to her with one eye open. It will be shown again Weds and Thurs to remind us how dangerous he is. Tess wanted him to feel at home, but did have trepidation at Dr Noll bringing his chemistry set with him. Conflict!
Mini-cliffhanger indeed! What could have caused the explosion? It could not be because the mad scientist was not titratring his liquids as most chemists do, nor was he using a chemical hood. This is very dangerous and DT should be careful entering the rickety house. Too bad Traz-E could not perform this function for him. Irony!

Matt, As someone who is waiting for “SOMETHING” to happen your list of events is staggeringly small. The first one happened “off camera” and why does it take a whole WEEK for every “pinch” of progress to materialize? Half of Cosgrove’s appearances is time wasting! I’m almost tempted to take Locher’s strips, cut them up, and reasemble them with a few word changes. Showing how easy it would have been to have arrived at the very same point some THREE weeks ago. Try it, and learn a useful NEW skill! James7344’s exagerated observation is quite correct. No need to go into that diversionarry “mumbo jumbo” of “treasured homilies” saying how long it takes an srtist to “draw” something. What James is saying IS, it’s taking too darned long!!

I didn’t check out the sketch earlier, but how he went from THAT to the final product, regardless of his employing technology to accomplish it, was impressive.
You know I’m old-fashioned when it comes to the original art – I like using the quill pen and brush with India ink and color using watercolors, but I’m wholly impressed with the results of his work. I think traditionalists biggest fear is that cartooning will devolve away from the old tools of the trade and move more towards employing technology to accomplish the result. Despite this healthy debate, I’m glad there are creator’s showing us all how effectively the internet can be used to break the boundaries we’ve been encountering in the PRINT medium for far too long.

It is well worth the trip, Matt. You won’t be disappointed. My biggest struggle during my visits is deciding what NOT to go and see. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the most impressive collections I have ever encountered in my life. I highly recommend it!

Let me see if I can describe to you why I think today’s ‘Pibgorn’ is beautiful. I love the three irregular panels, each with it’s separate dominant color. Each panel can be taken and enjoyed as a work all on its own, similar to a triptych. The first panel, whith the background of the sky, echos the shape of Dru’s arms as she soars upward. The second panel, showing the volcano down below, follows the shape of that volcano, with beautiful coloring, and the wonderful, almost three dimensional, effect of Dru soaring towards it. The third panel follows the shape of the volcanic eruption, and the orange coloring stands out here. I know the background story which makes it meaningful to me, yet I think that anyone just looking at today’s panel could enjoy it for the beauty of the artwork alone.

I think you’re spot on with the “school” Brooke comes from, which ordinarily isn’t MY cuppa tea, but as a comic strip, I’m just real glad to see folks breaking the traditional postage-stamp panel layout and he’s blowing my mind with it in the process!
I have collected a lot of Sunday pages by Feininger and some McCay and Gas Alley pages over the year’s and my favorite pages are those where the creator takes the reader out of the traditional space and widen’s his perspective within the construct of the larger work. It’s exciting for me to encounter someone with the guts to break the traditional composition rules and expand the form. I’m now a Pigborn fan, I guess. He’s definitely got my attention!

Okay, now that everyone is hugging each other and singing “Feelings” may I humbly offer a suggestion to improve today’s offering?
If I were DL’s editor, I would suggest he replace Angelorious’s (Yes, I know. Thank you, spell checker) word balloons with thought balloons. At least that way, when she steps up to the plate as designated villain, everyone in earshot does not hear her. And remove Tracy’s word balloon altogether and replace it with a caption overhead reading something like “Meanwhile Tracy is about to enter Dr. Noll’s house to find out the secret of Love Fire”.

I only wish that he wouldn’t sacrifice storytelling for “cool pictures”. Bill Watterson and Wiley Miller are both VERY good at breaking the traditional format while still CLEARLY telling the story.

With my awakening this morning to Pigborn, I guess I have some further exploration learning what MORE is out there. I’ve been enjoying the new Rip Haywire strip over at Universal Press’s website and it’s kind of like a somewhat campy throwback or homage to Caniff, which is kind of cool. The creator is pretty talented and given his story, kind of an unlikely person to be producing a comic strip, but he’s doing a fine job and having fun.

Second, “STATISTICS” support mine, they speak volumes. The current producers (MK&L and now L) have lost 86% of the papers they were fortunate to start with 12 years ago. Readership polls consistently rated the strip poorly (see Jeffery Lindenblat’s newspaper polls published in the DT Magazine over the past several years. The Editors tend to respond to the readers wishes.
Reality does not come from what a few individuals “wish” for, but rather what vast majorities tell their newspaper Feature Editors they LIKE and WHAT does NOT impress them. Unfortunatly, THEY TOO, do not give the “respect”, “high esteem” and “adulation” you wish for Locher’s Dick Tracy work. Matt, It’s called raw “REALITY”, not something decided and established by a “Peaboy wanna-be a coconut”!

Jeff, Margueritem, A first quick look at Pibgorn and RiP Haywire leaves me initially impressed. It was a surprise to see over 100 posts on that board. And it would be nice to have the latter here as well.

The strip “Love Is”, a couple years ago had a fantastic number of post, At that time Tracy and Gasoline Alley where neck and neck, and an effort was made here to get ahead of the later. My question is - What ever happened to “Love Is”? You go there and nobody apparently posts anymore??

I remember ‘Love is’ from the 70s. I think it’s fairly new to the go comics site. I never cared for for it back in the 70s, and still don’t now. It had a handful of loyal fans when it first showed up here, but I don’t know what’s happened to it since then.

Sydney, Love Is just started on our site last month, and though a handful of readers are loyally tagging the strip every day, few have commented on it. Odd - you would think a strip whose characters do everything in the buff would have people talking…

I agree Matt, but as an old local saying goes “ Mouth OPEN and STORY jump out!
Read what you have written again, but in the “comtext” of what Dick Locher and Mike Kilian DID to creator Chester Goulds’s great comic strip, Dick Tracy!
Yes I would AGREE with YOU, they were disrespectful! And the wages of that “SIN” haunts us to this day!

No, comparing Angelorious to a Kabuki player on meth is disrespectful. Pointing out that today’s panel 2 is yesterday’s panel 3 with different characters is a fact. And no one has yet answered how Tracy can possible hear Angelorious from next door. Or down the street.
“I think we ought to cease and desist from this type of activity.”
So, Locher shouldn’t even have an editor at all!
“AND–we don’t know yet if Angelorius is the villian!”

A week ago I looked forward to reading DT and the witty commentary below since the story lines I’ve been reading since coming upon this site are preposterous. Now thanks to some commentatro named Liam decided to tut-tut other commentators for pointing out the obvious snail-pace of the arc and other commentators expectation that we should never be critical of the cartoonist who writes for public consumption. Pardon me for seeming pedantic, but Liam’s tut-tutting has turned this board into a long pedantic rant!

I tried to follow this strip before I found gocomics. I loved the artwork, just could not figure out a plot or story line and gave up on it. I don’t think I can handle two 100+ comment sections though :-)

Very entertaining posts today as usual. It is nice to see that everyone is in a happier mood today.
I like how in Panel #3, Dick Tracy is outside while everyone else is inside. It shows how he is an outsider to Tess’ grand perfume scheme and how he feels alone in his marriage sometimes, don’t you think? Anyway, that was artsy and I like it. I’m going to go eat a sandwich now.

However, in terms of artwork, please check out http://www.twilightlady.com/ Not being a graphic artist myself, I’d like to know more about the process used. This is more like photo realism. The future of cartooning? Maybe.

Locher drew it that way. Another goof which slipped by the Editors certain people want to blame for all the “problems”. It’s this sort of disingenious “tip toeing” around reality that makes readers realize that there is a tiny core of people that keep on defending and implying that NO mistakes EVER flow out from Naperville.
Now here is guidance to another .. See 1-24-09 Window and Antique car below. Then see 1-27-09 Window, NO car. Dissapeared! Not careful enough to “remember” what he drew 3 days earlier! Can’t “hide” by saying the Editors should have spotted it. I’d think that they would not be expecing a Senior practitioner to make so many “101 Art” flubs! Everyone will make mistakes, it’s the numbing “frequency”, that casts a dark shadow over the quality of his work.
