A smile AND an umbrella works best!

I always wondered about that song…

A good set of waterproofs is much better umbrella’s are a pain ;)

Tho’ me thinks the song wouldn’t sound right some how

I can’t wait to hear his rendition of “Pennies From Heaven”.

I’m familiar with ‘wet dog smell’ – I hate to think what ‘wet Irwin’ smells like!

Where’s Gene Kelly?

BC13: I suspect you are rather young and missed the wonderful popular songs of the first 2/3’s of the 20th century. “Let a Smile be Your Umbrella” is not one of the great masterpieces, but it has its perky charms.

You can find many performances of it on YouTube. The Julie Andrews tribute is a nice duet with Gene Kelly, but the choppy video is joltingly unrelated to the audio. And I recommend avoiding the barbershop chorus version which sent chills down my spine and not in a good way. But YouTube is a great way to get caught up whenever an unknown song comes up.

Irwin & Nerwin remind me of Cousin It from The Addams Family.

or does anyone know of a better explanation of how that umbrella came to be there?

Thanks for your input. I’m not much on You Tube, but I am an avid watcher of TCM, but tend to lean toward gangster, espionage, war, comedy etc rather than musicals - unless they are the seasonal variety (Easter Parade, White Christmas, Holiday Inn, Going My Way etc - which I own). You may be surprised to know that I’ve got a Glenn Miller CD and a couple of mixed swing CD’s. I also own the Glenn Miller story and am soon to purchase the Fabulous Dorseys. And I do have the Sound of Music, South Pacific and select Doris Day films such as Calamity Ja.ne, On Moonlight Bay & By the Light of the Silvery Moon

You might say I own select pieces of the past from some of my favorite actors, such as Bogart, Bacall, Bergman, Cagney, Crosby, Gable, Grant, Stanwyck & Stewart. I am also collecting films from the master of suspense, himself, and currently have most of his more popular fims and some of his not-so-popular films.

Sadly, I do. He uttered the infamous “The King is a Fink.” He was mugged and, as he was crawling for help, run over by the King in his carriage. The last straw was the carriage was the getaway vehicle for the mugger.

You’ll get stay drier with a smile and an umbrella than with a smile alone. (With apologies to Al Capone.)
