Sigh…No, it’s NOT “the right of the states to…maintain a militia”.It’s “the right of the PEOPLE” to keep and bear arms. Congress has said so on more than one occasion, and the Supreme Court has said so on more several occasions, the most recent one in the “Heller” decision. And the plain wording of the Second Amendment says so on all occasions.I expect Verne to be more knowledgeably literate about such things…

Sorry, Darkeforce, but it’s an individual right. Here’s what one of your own has to say about it – http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/07/04/881431/-Why-liberals-should-love-the-Second-Amendment

Mr Fry & Mr Lewis, love your strip, but if you want to go into politics, you might want to be better informed. The second amendment does not give any rights to the state, it is the right to keep and bear arms for the individual citizen that is being affirmed and is not being given. Please see the recent Supreme Court decision. Also the first 10 amendments to the constitution are all affirmations of individual rights, none of those rights apply to the states

@zellich: the NRA is so powerful they’ve twisted the Constitution around their little finger. Not the only thing in Washington that’s been distorted by inordinate influence… but one of the most dangerous to life and limb.

The last word from the Supreme Court on this matter was in the Heller Decision where the judges stated 9-0 that the 2nd amendment is an individual right.

It is an individual right no less that those of the 1st Amendment. It’s ok to be funny but not good to tell lies under the guise of being funny.

David Neylon, it may be the latest word from the Supremes, but I doubt it will be the last.

While I agree that the 2nd Amendment establishes an individual right to bear arms, I can’t agree with zellich that it is “plain wording.” The prohibition on infringement of the right to bear arms is prefaced by “A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State,…” The “well-regulated Militia” is the justification for the uninfringed right to bear arms, and in the absence of same (our standing army and National Guard have replaced the colonial Militia system — to say nothing of municipal Police Departments, which were unknown in 1787 — and the “militias” springing up nowadays are hardly “well-regulated”), it casts rather a different light on the concept.

Darkforce and Trusted Mechanic are wrong. Period. It’s obvious, they simply hate the NRA and Republicans, thus they must be Democrats or worse liberals. Liberals have always hated those two things. Darkforce and TM have twisted what they wrote for they can not accept that reality it’s and individual right. We (the individuals) ARE the people.

But what about the Tatoo! Who wants to hear more Gov’t ranting. Most people don’t follow the rules as we all know, anyway.

Continuing the anti-gun bias of the media and influencing the minds of the young that enjoy this fine comic strip is simply political propaganda that should not be present.

The absurd equivocations of the ’liberals" here would be challenged in a situation where their own llves were endangered for lack of the ability to effectively defend themselves and loved ones.

In the Constitution, “The People” refers to PEOPLE. Everything is not “collectivized” except in the minds of those who would like only governments to have power. Recent events in the Middle East and elsewhere show the folly of this.

I´m going to wait until the forensics team on CSI: Hedgehas weighed in. They´ve had 10 years to document thetruth, though, and get RJ to accept the true last word.

Staple guns in the hands of bears . . . too bad we encroached on them so much they had to take up something more than the crushing force and mighty jaws they were born with, and had to start looking for other ways to defend themselves from the bazooka-strength staples our Yankee ingenuity came up with.

God said, Let there be light.
