Monty by Jim Meddick for August 10, 2011
Transcript:
Monty: At first, I was excited to have an imaginary friend, but soon little problems started to emerge... this is great! My very own imaginary friend! No longer will I feel like a loner outcast! Now I've got a pal! Someone to share my interests in tape dispensers, "Necco Wafers" and "Deep Space 9" trading cards! Hey! Maybe we should go in and check out my "Constable Odo" card! Is ad - do you wanna go inside and check out my "Constable Odo"? Weasel: Hmmm? What's that? I think I drifted off somewhere around "tape dispensers..."

Even in Eno’s imagination he still has no friends.

Wow, young Monty has DS9 stuff? Grown Monty must be much younger than he looks.

Wait a second … Monty was in his 20’s in 1993 when Star Trek: Deep Space Nine launched.

Ok according to the WWW, the strip launched in 1985, meaning, it’s possible Monty is only 25 currently, but, he seems much older – like maybe late 30’s. Jim, will you come in here and clear this up for us? Thanks!

Time travel, obviously (for proof, see today’s La Cucaracha).

The DS9 reference doesn’t work at all. Monte showed up in Robotman in the early 1990s, so he was an adult at the time either before DS9 started or in its earliest years . If the card had been for the ST:TOS, then it would have been much more believable.

c’mon….. does it really matter?

Y’all, this is a flashback. Clearly the cards were Star Wars, not Star Trek. But after the second trilogy, Monty blocked his SW card collection out of his memory and repopulated it with Odo, Kira, and the rest of the DS9 gang. Don’t you see the past in a rosy light through the haze of memory?

I’m beginning to wonder if all the other characters in this strip might be imaginary as well.

Time for time technobabble… I don’t think this is the same Monty as as in the 1990s. Over time, the strip has been showing us Montys of a constant age from slightly parallel universes. While their presents seemed the same and have continuity, their pasts slowly deviated. This Monty would have been a kid when DS9 was on, and I doubt he ever met Robotman, except in the form of EB, who would be history’s compensation according to the Laws of Conservation of Tropes and Archetypes.*(I wonder if they bought it.)

It’s a comic strip. Who cares? Even the writers sometimes forget what they’ve already written. Comics are for the moment.

It seems that Monty has many different alias looking at all the comments he has made on this page!! And arguing with himself has always been one of his faults!

Does anybody remember that Monty confessed to being an extraterrestrial just before Robotman left the series?
