Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for August 28, 2011
Transcript:
Pig: Hi, Ms. Jones. Have you met my neighbor Bob's son, Jojo? He's learning kazoo. He's hoping it will one day be a nice extracurricular activity that could beef up his college application. Show her, Jojo. Jojo: Toot. Ms. Jones: That's nice. This is my son, Phillip. He plays violin. He's also president of the student body, the debate team, and the drama club. Which hasn't stopped him from getting a 4.6 G.P.A. and the highest S.A.T. score in his school's history. Not bad considering he spent the summer saving an entire African nation from starvation. Jojo: Tooooot. Pig: He is such a show-off.

Be thankful Jojo is using a kazoo!

Am I the only one who was expecting a pun?
Sisyphos about 13 years ago
I don’t think Phillip is all that perfect! After all, he spells his name with two L’s, where one is perfectly sufficient and etymologically more proper. Tooooot!

Those who can, do.
Those who can’t, kazoo.
I just made that up but it has a nice ring to it, no? OK maybe a buzz.
boyfromoz about 13 years ago
It looked like it was leading to a great Pastis pun…..(sigh……)
hariseldon59 about 13 years ago
I wonder if he hired a tooter to teach him to play.

As I read this I was trying to figure out the bad pun that was surely coming.
ajnotales about 13 years ago
I kept trying to figure out the anticipated pun too, as I read along … guess the joke’s on us !!!
hariseldon59 about 13 years ago
Jojo was the name of one of the crocs in an earlier strip.
McGehee about 13 years ago
Look on the bright side, Jojo. Someday that African nation will build an atom bomb and cause an international crisis that wipes out all life on earth. And boy won’t Phillip look foolish then!

Beans, beans, the musical fruit, the more you eat, the more you toot, the more you toot, the better you feel, – Let’s have beans for EVERY meal.(That always killed in fourth grade)

When you got IT,Flaunt IT!I don’t hear a peep out o’ Phill…….☻

I am totally against violins in comics. Kids may be reading these, so Pastis should not put violins in his strip. Pastis can stick that up his kazoo!
A_NY_Outlaw about 13 years ago
Poor Jojo, all he wanted to do was toot his horn.
rgcviper about 13 years ago
I, too, was bracing myself for the pun. However, it was nowhere to be found. Perhaps Stephan is on to us as readers … ?

How about: My kid sells pot to your honor student.

I’m pretty sure 4.0 is the highest possible GPA.

Looks like the pun is on us.

How touching that our dear departed Crocodilian Jojo has been memorialized by neighbor Bob in naming his nephew. The two share a common level of ability.

A tutor who tooted the fluteTried to tutor two tooters to toot. Said the two to the tutor,“Is it harder to toot orto tutor two tooters to toot?”
hariseldon59 about 13 years ago
Get back, Jojo. Go home.
codedaddy about 13 years ago
One of these days I’d like to see some food on those plates.
codedaddy about 13 years ago
Of the two, which will be the next eminem, and which will be waiting tables?
Fan o’ Lio. about 13 years ago
I would rather take an enema than listen to Eminem, they sound alike and produce about the same result.

I think Mrs Jones is padding Phil’s resume.

Little Phillip reminds me of those Dos Equis commercials, starring The Most Interesting Man in the World. Does his mother have a tattoo that reads “Son”?

Apparently some schools these days offer Advanced Placement (AP) classes for students trying to get a head start on college. These count more than regular high school classes, so getting an “A” in them can lead to a GPA higher than 4.0.
Ermine Notyours about 13 years ago
Maybe he got a 4.6 GPA because Jojo was doing the math.
bmonk about 13 years ago
I too was waiting with great expectations for a lovely Sunday Pun. Alas! ’Twas not to be.
.
However, it does take me back to when I was a founding member of the first revived University of Chicago Marching Kazoo Band to take the field after 70 years—well, truth be told, the first ever.
And probably the last, considering how we sounded.

a GPA of 4.6 is not possible, 4.0 is strait A’s

Well, I suppose Philip’s life will be worry-free career-wise, and fun-free otherwise.

Kazoos make more of a buzzing, humming sound. I’m guessing Jojo’s not very good at the kazoo
