Danae: *Si-i-igh* Jeffrey: Something wrong, Danae? Danae: Oh, it's just that the leaves are almost gone, it's getting colder and colder and the days are getting shorter... Jeffrey: The days aren't really shorter. That's a common misconception due to the decreasing daylight hours as the Earth tilts on its axis away from the sun. The length of a day is still 24 hours. But if we were in Australia, we'd be getting more daylight time, only not at this very moment through, because it's actually night there right now... Tempers, however, seem to get a lot shorter as it gets colder...

He shouldn’t mess with her melancolyiness (spelling?)
loganswift about 13 years ago
It’s melancholy. Just melancholy, with no need to add “-ness.” It can function as a noun just like it is.
FatTonyBalducci about 13 years ago
I think her temper is always short

Mine, too. I hate it when the nights grow longer and colder. Let there be light and warmth!

Up in Alaska durning the winter ,they amuse each other by staying drunk, stabing or shooting each other. They also shoot all road signs. There is no way you can read any road sign, ever.
madKanga about 13 years ago
This is Australia, and its evening, and the daylight hours (note careful wording) are certainly getting longer. Most kids love to jump in the leaves – Jeffrey really is strange.

Never, ever try to console a melancholy female with logic. It’s both pointless and dangerous to your physical well-being. A little sympathy, understanding, and a well-timed hug is more effective- and feels better too, in both the long and short term. A flannel shirt and some padding can’t hurt, either.

Yeah, Everyone knows Danae is a grouch!

@ Mad KangaWhen our son was small, I thought it was great fun for him, our dog, and I to romp in the leaves. And then my wife pointed out to me what animals do in those leaves.Reeeeeally took the fun out of it.Maybe my wife had a talk with Jeffery, too.

And when the day(light) is at its shortest, and it’s the darkest, and the dreariest…winter BEGINS! Nature’s meanest trick.

I lived on the equator for three years, and found it to be missing something – No long, cold, crisp nights, or being able to mow your yard at 8-9pm. The only respite came when the dry and wet seasons began. It was a refreshing change… for a while…

Melatonin-choly?

Count your blessings, Danae. In a few decades, it won’t be only days feeling shorter, it’ll be the years and the decades.
tripwire45 about 13 years ago
He talks too much.
celeconecca about 13 years ago
yeah, it’s just not as lyrical as:Oh it’s a long, long whilefrom May ‘till DecemberAnd the days grow shortWhen you reach September. When the Autumn weatherturns the leaves to flameOne hasn’t got timeFor the waiting game

I don’t blame Danae one bit. People like Jeffrey deserve a severe beating. He should be thankful he’s still alive.

As I always say: There’s a big difference between being smart and being a smart ass.

As we approach perihelion (next in 2012-01-05), the angular velocity of Earth relative to the Sun decreases, so the days measured by the apparent movement of the Sun are getting longer. The sidereal day is getting steadily longer because of tidal drag.
wwoody3 about 13 years ago
1.Jeffery isn’t a smart ass he is just excited to share his knowledge. To some, especially those that are not all that smart, it hurts there little feelings BOHO and they lash-out with little comment like “no one likes a smart ass” instill test time and then they are your best friend

I am in agreement with Danae. I hate to see the leaves turn from colors of gold and red to brown and fall from the trees. I hate the cold weather but I love the snow. Everyone have a nice day.

I’m glad Danae decked him, because I was about to! :-)

I say day, and night, all the time. Day light hours? Seriously? People don’t get confused. Obtuse know it alls, on the other hand, have to have their say, otherwise they’d never be invited to a conversation.
bmckee about 13 years ago
And it doesn’t matter. People understand exactly what Danae is saying and will tend to find him an arrogant little know-it-all. Been there, done that, been dumped int he leaves for it.
psychlady about 13 years ago
Well done Danae, know it alls deserve it!
Hunter7 about 13 years ago
No one is supporting Jeffrey. Not surprised, the smart-mouthed little know-it-all. Dark more, Light less. Now excuse me while I go find some sunlight for the 20 minutes I need to keep the grumbles away.

Well, I’ve done Christmas in New Zealand’s summer, but if you live in Pacific time zone, it’s already five hours earlier, TOMORROW, there!
weasel_monkey about 13 years ago
The truly crazy part of Christmas in Summer in Australia is that everyone puts up all the Winter styled decorations and fake snow! Surely after all this time those from the Land Down Under can come to terms that there will never be a Frosty the Snow Man for them. 6 White Boomers, on the other hand…
Joseph Krois about 13 years ago
He soooo deserved that! Wise-@$$!
Varnes about 13 years ago
The smartest person here today is Kim. She is absolutely right. Throw in a significant other, (besides the dog and cat..) and a little warmed cognac and you have the most wonderful evening cued right up…

Don’t mind cold, don’t mind leaves falling — DO mind losing the daylight. Hate it when the sun sets before I get out of work at 5:00 pm. Why can’t we stay on daylight saving time all year???
pbarnrob about 13 years ago
Last time I intentionally jumped in a pile of leaves, we got out the Campho to get a tick to back out…
