Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for January 08, 2012
Transcript:
Luann: "I told the school counselor that I don't feel very popular. She said I shouldn't worry about popularity. She said my thinking should be, "I want everyone to like me but I won't care if they don't" So I spent the day thinking that" Luann: "Well, you sure don't like me. And you don't. Used to. Not anymore. Not sure about you 2 sometimes. Definitely not" Luann: "I ended up not caring about every person I know" Bernice: "Guess that solved your popularity problem, huh?"

“Gunther used to, not anymore.”
Gee Luann… Could this have had anything to do with the years of disrespect, humiliation, and indignity you’ve heaped on him? He practically worshipped you like a goddess, yet you treated him like a common floormat.

“I ended up not caring about every person I know.” And that’s different from normal, how?

Wah, wah, wah! O.K., now I’m really getting bored with her self-absorption! We need a revisit from that old neighbor-lady of hers. (Whatshername?) She gives great advice, that unfortunately tends to go over Luann’s head. Sigh!!

I see numerous cats in Luanns later future!

Boo-freaking-hoo, Luann. This whole week’s been “Nobody likes me, everybody hates me. I think I’ll go eat worms.” Maybe they’d want to be around you if you weren’t as mopey or didn’t think of them only in regards to what they can do for you.

She’s just a normal teenage girl…most of them are very low in self esteem, but try desperately not to show it to others…@raspberryice54: therapy cannot solve being a teenager..

Is this a rare instance of Sunday being part of the current story arc?

Makes me think of the lyrics to “Positively 4th Street”. I never was very popular so I just focused on not being annoying,

I read these comments and I think that no one either remembers being a 16 yr old girl, or they never were one. Luann is just a normal girl with the same issues all teen girls have. I wanted to be popular and pretty then. Sometimes as a kid it is hard to see what is in front of your face. Compairing her to Toni is unfair. Toni is an adult. Of course she is more grounded. Greg Evans hits it on the head every time! So did Gizmo Cat.

Once Greg Evans gives Luann lips, her personality will change for the better and she will look like her mother, only with blonde hair. That would be a nice change.

Luann HAS treated Gunther badly. She has crushed him on several occassions. When he gave her a necklace that he hand made, she gushed over it with stars in her eyes. Then when Aaron asked about it, she dropped it like a hot pototato and said it was “nothing.” Not sure if Gunther witnessed it, but it was still a crappy thing to do. Not to mention all the times she flat out walked away from him or ignored him when Aaron (or any cute boy) walked in the room. Of course she does that to her female friends too. And I HATE how every time Gunther likes someone else Luann gets so jealous that she tries to convince him not to like anyone else, or tries to convince the girl that she has no right to go out with him. At least she is not like that with Rosa. Not now anyway; she was at first. I don’t hate Luann – just her boy crazy-ness. (I, too, am ready to move on from this low self esteem arc.)

Luann should stop thinking that way, sometimes people give Luann the right advice, but it goes over her head or right through without any affect. Luann shouldn’t be thinking that way, “what do they have that I don’t” (applies to last week’s storyline) or “do they like me, or hate me?” (today) She should be thinking, “I am Luann, I may sometimes worry over little things, but that’s what makes me, ME. So if they don’t like me, I could care less, what matters is that I like me. And, Tiffany, she doesn’t control my life, so let her put on her mask of makeup, because underneath that mask, she’s just as insecure as the rest of us.” Not that Luann should actually say that to anyone’s face, because that could start a fight……..

I couldn’t agree more. The older I get, the longer grows that list of people who can kiss my derriere. When I hit the half-century mark (several years ago), I really burst out of my shell.

it’s funny how many people are expecting a 16 year old NOT to be self absorbed in some way. or maybe living with my teenage niece (who i do love, btw) has jaded me to all teens.
Mordock999 almost 13 years ago
Yep, Luann.Nobody like you because you’re plain.
You should get all prettied up like Tiffany.
Remember" The MORE Beauty the MORE Boo…,"
Ah, WHATS the Use?
Luann needs to be taught a BITTER lesson about whats REALLY important in life, and it ain’t LOOKS. And I think Mr. Oz is gonna be the one to teach it to Her.
ENJOY your upcoming Heart-Break, Lu….,

When I was in high school, I didn’t brother trying to be popular since I was more focused on just getting through my classes, plus, to me, being popular is overrated and can do more harm than good a lot of the time.

Yes, Luann, we all know if the teachers liked you, they’d be throwing good grades at your feet :PMy teachers loathed me BECAUSE I was a straight A student.

I remember being 16 and I hated other people my age for being so stupid.
Airman almost 13 years ago
Ironic or intentional but Greg has used this very well drawn installment to show Luann with many of her girl friends. Result: They ARE better looking than Luann.
my_discworld almost 13 years ago
why does everyone want her to get with gunther? he’s boring, he’s awkward, and he’s not a very confident person. yes, I get that they’re all perpetually in high school, but still. give luann the opportunity to look for something better while she’s young.

The problem with Luann is she’s stuck being drawn by someone who doesn’t want their baby to grow up.

funny how that works.

This theme is getting old & boring.

Well, when you only see people in light of what they do for you instead of doing for them, you will come to that conclusion. And you will become the kind of person no one wants to be around. It is a self-fulfilling prophesy.
brdesert almost 13 years ago
How about a life changing event for Luann? Throw us a curve ball, Greg. Same can be said for Charlie Brown trying to kick the football while Lucy holds it. Too predictable and boring.
ereff almost 13 years ago
She forgot to reflect on her parents and her brother and Toni so maybe that will be tomorrow’s thought line, and then finally ending with Quill. And the cartoonist could also include Mrs. Horner as a steady loyal source. But I think the author is just trying to imitate all the teens who have self-image concerns, so basically it is right on target. Who do you think the audience is for this strip? Adults or teens? How many teens read the strips nowadays?

Probably Catch 22 – If you don’t care about people, you’ll not be popular and if you’re not popular you won’t care about people. Because people are mostly popular because they make people feel liked and valued.
docforbin almost 13 years ago
Luann WOULD be popular if Aaron Hill was still around. Aaron Hill was the only person who ever cared for Luann. But that evil Tiffany kept stealing Aaron Hill away from Luann and prevented her from forming a relationship before he moved to Hawaii.
Luann can solve all her problems by running away to Hawaii, reuniting with Aaron Hill and running away with him to Mexico so they can get married and have a bazillion kids. God told me Luann and Aaron Hill must get together so that the Universe won’t collapse upon itself.
Do it, Luann! Run away and leave those losers in Pittstown and fulfill your destiny with Aaron Hill!
LUANN AND AARON HILL WERE MEANT TO BE TOGETHER FOREVER!

If Luann keeps falling for Justin Bieber clones, maybe she should try channeling Selena Gomez.

I wonder if this “story” arc is just filler until Greg delights us with the antics of TJ tormenting Ann Eiffel? Luann has received sound advice and/or commentary from Bernice, Nancy, Quill, Gunther, and even the little kids at the library. Will she take it to heart and finally throw in her lot with Quill? Then Quill moves back to Oz and her heart is broken? There could be fresh material coming out of that. Or, this could just be standard Luann-angst stuff. Either way, I’m eagerly waiting for the TJ/Ann arc to resume.

If someone cares enough about you to outright dislike you, that says something! Better than people not caring at all.

Again, her dog is the only one who doesn’t give up on her. Truly, our dogs are our best friends, no matter what-money, illness, homeliness, family, or country. They are always there, even in Iraq, where dogs are hated & China/Korea, where dogs are eaten. Man (& women’s) best friend!!

Hmm. The “nobody likes me” complex. Where is this story going? Kinda scarey.

How can you expect anyone to like you when you hate yourself?
