Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for February 15, 2012
Transcript:
Rat: What do you got there? Pastis: It's a letter some reader wrote to a newspaper about my use of the word 'alright'... the correct term is 'all right,' and he never wants to see it written as 'alright' in the strip again. Rat: And this guy took the time to write an actual letter to the newspaper saying that? Pastis: Yep. Rat: Is the poor guy alright? Pastis: Hey, don't criticize him, alright? Pig: Alright, alright, what's going on here?

The number of craps Stephen Pastis gives is running low.

Ironically, the first thought to pop into mind as I read this was that the first sentence should be “What do you have” or “What have you got”, not “What do you got”.

Coincidence – this was exactly the topic of yesterday’s Pibgorn strip.
Yontrop about 13 years ago
It should be two words when you write something like, “Everything will be all right now.” But there is nothing wrong with writing “alright” in dialog — as in a cartoon. But in dialog, there should be a way to indicate the correct pronunciation (depending on what part of NY/NJ your character comes from) when saying, “alright alright already.” Is it “al” or “all”?

must be a grammar nazi. a failed english major. get that ba in english, and thought that he would become the next hemingway, but became an english teacher at high school. still working on his novel, and only finished 1 chapter and won’t show anyone, because it isn’t done yet. liberal arts majors are crap.

SayWhat — neither. It’s awright awready.
And yeah, loved “syntax”, rf_eq…. a real groaner…

Enough of this, a’aight?
HC Wap about 13 years ago
All right, usually pronounced as if it were a single word, probably should have followed the same orthographic development as already and altogether. But despite its use by a number of reputable authors, the spelling alright has never been accepted as a standard variant, and the writer who chooses to risk that spelling had best be confident that readers will acknowledge it as a token of willful unconventionality rather than as a mark of ignorance.
Yup! Stephen is alright!
marararam about 13 years ago
@firedome: wouldn’t that rather be an alstraight?
wiselad about 13 years ago
from Merrian-WebsterDefinition of ALRIGHT: all right
Usage Discussion of ALRIGHTThe one-word spelling alright appeared some 75 years after all right itself had reappeared from a 400-year-long absence. Since the early 20th century some critics have insisted alright is wrong, but it has its defenders and its users. It is less frequent than all right but remains in common use especially in journalistic and business publications. It is quite common in fictional dialogue, and is used occasionally in other writing <the first two years of medical school were alright — Gertrude Stein>.

walruscarver2000 about 13 years ago
Alright, let’s get this sorted out. And all you guys who want it spelled all right go stand on the right so that the alrights are all that’s left and the all rights are all right.

justalurkr about 13 years ago
I don’t waste time writing to newspapers about it, but the correct usage of ‘all right’ is a peeve of mine (not pet; it isn’t housebroken yet.)
However, messing with pedants is one of my most favorite things ever.
Well done, Mr. Pastis.

Alot of people ain’t happy with alright, but really, who gives a carp about the English language? What’s so important about communication, anyway? It’s not like kids are reading this stuff, and grownups don’t care. Yeah, I said “alot.”

alright, now this is funny!
Sisyphos about 13 years ago
“Alright” [“Al, who”?] is not all right. Cartoon-Pastis is just prostituting himself to the ignorant masses who have swallowed the kool-aid of descriptive rather than prescriptive grammar. This reduces mutual comprehension and increases confusion and misunderstanding and the secondary malefactions to which they may lead. It is a crime. I am glad that RL-Pastis can use cartoon-Pastis in this deliciously ironic humorous tweak of our cultural biases.

fritzoid Premium Member about 13 years ago
It’s alright Ma, I’m only bleeding.
Sisyphos, if you insist upon prescriptive grammar, you’re going to be pushing that boulder uphill for a LONG time. Language changes over time and, as H C Wap suggests, if you’re bent out of shape by “alright” why don’t you push for the “correction” of “altogether” and “already” (or “almighty”, for that matter)?
Don’t think twice, it’s alright.
Defective about 13 years ago
I have no doubt in my mind that there’s some grammar nazi out there that felt he needed to write in to the newspaper to ‘correct’ this. I’ve seen then often enough online, so I’m sure there are still a few out there reading newspapers.

My ears are ringing from the shock of “What do you got”. One hopes that was intentional by Pastis, intended to foreshadow the “alright” v. “all right” jokes.
