I predict the guy who wins the election will be... Will be... The guy who most people vote for! Hahahahahahahahaha... Yeah, that was probably funny back when people believed it.
And let’s not forget that due to the oddities of the Electoral College, in particular (but not limited to) the “winner takes all” policy followed by almost all the states, the popular vote may have little resemblance to the actual results. .In fact, a candidate can theoretically get almost 75% of the popular vote and still lose the election. Or in a race with three candidates one of them can get almost 50% of the popular votes and and the others 25% each… and still the guy with most votes may get no electoral votes at all!.Fortunately those are theoretical scenarios that are extremely unlikely in reality. But the mere fact that such undemocratic results are even possible shows how poorly designed the electoral system of the USA is.
Hitler being elected to a minority government in a multiparty parliamentary system is a red herring; the Nazis still seized control after the election, using the Reichstag fire as an excuse to push for “emergency powers”.Democracy certainly isn’t perfect – but it is the best way of protecting and promoting personal freedom and liberty. Which is not to discount that the US electoral college system is a holdover from the less than fully democratic intents of the founding fathers.
Darcey: If I understand your vague use of pronouns, do you really think people today understand democracy? They typically have at least three different definitions which they freely intermix and confuse: 1) Majority rule; 2) Elections; 3) a free country. But without stringent limits on majority rule, they can vote to violate your rights. Elections? Every dictatorship can put on an election. And nothing about democracy guarantees freedom.
Now, none of this should be taken to mean that I am opposed to having elections. Elections under a constitutional republic are a vital part of assuring the consent of the governed, without which no government can endure. And it’s a good thing to have a chance periodically to throw the bums out and bring in a new set of bums. But the only thing that matters is a government that protects rights; all else is a minor detail.
I did a cartoon once where Toby claims his social studies teacher said that a Free Market Economy and a Democracy aren’t the same thing. He goes on to point out that the guy doesn’t LOOK like an atheist. I still think it probably confused a few readers.
If one party gets the most seats – they win. If their leader doesn’t win in his/her riding – then someone who won has to step down – and off we go with a by-election. It happens. Rarely. if there wasn’t any politics, CNN would only be on 2 hours a day. And Fox would have never been at all. Sigh
