The first thing I thought was “I don’t get it”.My second thought was, “I’ll look at the comments for an explanation”.Which made The J.A.M.’s comment a bit of a let-down.
I recently invented the word “Goog” for a gag that requires research. I now see I need another term for one where the research doesn’t help. I’ve got it! It’s a “Bad Joke”!
You can work non-stop and become top sales rep, and it gets you a hole in the ground, just like all the others. It’s not funny, but it’s amusing to watch people drudge through such lives.
If he hadn’t been top sales rep, maybe the stone would have mentioned his wife and kids. Or if he’d had a wife and kids, he might not have been top sales rep.
Well, the only Jim Dandy I know about is the lead singer for Black Oak Arkansas who was a bit of a joke. Remembering That made me laugh. So it wasn’t a total loss.
Jim Dandy may refer to:“Jim Dandy” (song) by LaVern Baker, American rhythm and blues singerJames “Jim Dandy” Mangrum (born 1948), vocalist for Black Oak ArkansasJim Dandy Stakes, an American Thoroughbred horse raceJim Dandy (horse), the upset winner of the 1930 Travers Stakes, after whom the Jim Dandy Stakes is namedJim Dandy Stab
I went with “Jim Dandy” because it’s a “can do” kind of name. Sort of works for a guy who is top sales person. Yes, sales is tough.
I thought the “Top Sales Rep” on a headstone seemed ridiculous and strong enough to be a gag. The dates hint that that’ is what killed him. Seemed funny (and real enough) at the time, and still does. I’m guilty of doing cartoons that I think are funny. I don’t worry whether everyone “gets it.” Of course I hope that someone does. Thanks, “MeGoNow.” If I think it works I put it out there.
But wait, there’s more to this story….
At first, I had a more generic name.
Then, as I was putting the monthly batch together, I decided it would be fun to do a shout-out to one of the sales reps at Universal Uclick and stick his name on it.
In hindsight, I totally get why that wasn’t a good idea, but at the moment I thought it would be fun and a tip of the hat to a guy who really does his best in a very, very tough market.
A few weeks later I get a call from the guy and he’s pretty spooked seeing his name on the headstone and wants to know why I did it!
So I told him – but as I hear myself explain it, I begin to see it from his POV and realize it was a bad idea. It didn’t help that, as I’m talking to him, my wife is overhearing the conversation and is saying, you did what?!!
The only Jim Dandy I can think of is the ice cream my family gets from Friendly’s. It’s called a Jim Dandy it has walnuts, bananas, different ice creams, strawberries, and other stuff.
and to think I felt pretty dumb checking the comments to “get it”… truth is I sales-managed 12 sales reps for Zenith (remember the quality goes in before the name goes on) they all had a great life, me not so much… they got credit for any sale that hit their territory… while at golf, the pool, the club, whatever.. me I had to drop in and try to get them to visit the customers and cut into their “fun-time”…
Okay, I don’t get it either; however, I can’t get the song ’JIM DANDY TO THE RESCUE" out of my head. Perhaps I should have paid better attention to the words of the song?

The only thing I got from Google was that the birth and death dates correspond to Met alum Gary Carter. Beyond that, I can’t figure it out.

Work killed him.

I suspect that instead of a coffin, they wrapped him up in his work to bury him.

Back in the day some people would actually call Gary Larsen and beg for an explanation. Anybody have Mike’s number?

My guess is, it is a personal nod to a friend that died.

I love this particular strip. I shared it with some of the sales reps that I work with and they loved it to.
This hit the nail on the head!
