I KNEW Delta would pick law as her future career (and yes, I’m aware that Greg has no intention of ever really going there with her — I just always felt that Delta was exactly the type to study law, practice for a few years, and then go into politics when the time was right!)

Its so simple to attack lawyers and the profession of law in such a general way. Considering how law and lawyers have protected human rights in this country and in the world in general and considering how those who besmirch lawyers run to them when they find themselves in trouble, this is so simplistic as to be aggravating. Of course, being one myself, I feel this way. -:) It is nice to see Luann, and I wonder what this particular story arc is going to lead too. Btw, go Delta!! good to see you every now and then.

Re; Greg’s blog…he says readers are against sex in a comic strip. Huh?? Is this not America, the Sex Central? Everything on tv is sex. Free accessible porn on internet. Porn mags on shelves at Barnes and Noble. Sex manuals accessible to children on shelves at BN. My middle school kids knew all about sex by 5th grade – ages 11-12. Some even younger. Come on, Greg. You aren’t fooling us. It is YOU who are not comfortable with it being born in a different era. Lynne Johnston addressed it in her strips about Liz and Anthony when they were teenagers and in college with other boyfriends. Not to forget Lawrence – the gay childhood friend and neighbor. Lynne Johnston got a huge backlash about the gay controversy but her strips survived the storm. She still had strong readership. So it is Greg’s own queasiness about addressing sex AND backlash from the conservative readers. I do wish he would be honest about it instead of putting it on us readers.

My experience is that Mr. Evans is basing his conclusions on mail that he gets from his readers. Despite whatever reality may exist on the ground, it appears that a majority of Luann readers want to keep the strip sex-free. Just because some here feel differently does not make Evans dishonest.

To come to think of it, most of the comments are on the comments, not the strip itself. The strip just provides a seed – e.g. Delta wanting to be a lawyer – and the comments grow from there. Comments cause more comments. Sort of like lawyers cause more lawyers.

That depends on how you define “chaos” – as well as “anarchy”. .Gandhi saw his theory of “ordered anarchy” as a minimum of government in a society, others claim that’s an oxymoron, and that “order” has no place in its definiton. The literal meaning of “anarchy” is to be without a leader; the common interpretation is to be without a publically enforced goverment – the implication is that without that social contract in force, public disorder and lawlessness results.

You’d be wrong – it wasn’t just the papers who made the decision, it was the Christian Family Network (Ohio) and the American Family Network (Mississippi) who urged their members to cancel subscriptions and put a lot of pressure on the advertisers. Remember, papers run on advertising. The death threats and hate mail she got were just a fun bonus..Remember, Lawrence came out in ‘93, before comics were on the web. In ’97 (still no web presence) when Lawrence found a partner, the strip was running in 1700 papers, over 100 dropped the strip – some ran it again when the offendingly gay Lawrence wasn’t featured, I don’t know which ones dropped it altogether. .But comparing newspaper syndications now what they were the wouldn’t tell you much since so many papers have folded in the interim. Just to make it more confusing, many papers don’t carry a strip in the actual paper, but include it on their website.

Look, people who have a religious or political axe to grind and want to close down something use direct pressure on the wallet – they target the advertisers first, along with members of their congregation that are subscribers, they don’t waste time on the damned.

As for me, lets see Quill and Luann go to the movies and then have breakfast together. The sex does not have to be seen, just implied.

Really? And in whose house is this post-unseen-coital breakfasting supposed to be taking place? You better “imply” an apartment or hotel room, as well as “imply” a landlord who rents to minors or “imply” a credit card that isn’t paid by either of their parents if you hope to see that scenario..And if you’re going to say Brad & TJ’s place, remember that TJ would rat to Nancy in a NY minute.

“If a church group, such as the Southern Baptists are told by their preachers that something is sinful, they will except it as gospel (Pun) even if it is not. As far as the majority of the parishioners are concerned, if the preacher said it, it is the same as if Christ said it.”.accept.But I think you don’t know much about Baptists. At the conclusion of most sermons the flaws in the thinking is discussed over the ensuing meal and related to those who weren’t listening and didn’t hear what was said or miss-said. In fact, Baptist are among the least likely to accept proclamations not backed by scripture and among the most likely to argue over the interpretations derived.

I personally know of one instance where an elderly widow left her estate to be divided equally between her two sons, with the eldest son appointed executor. When the elder son began appropriating most of the assets for himself, the youngest son had no recourse other than to hire an attorney. It all went downhill from that point. The attorneys for both sides profited handsomely.

And if you insist on focusing on sexual matters in comic strips, I call your attention to the discussion between Luann and Gunther regarding the fact that he finds himself unable to talk to his lady love. .Luann says, “Maybe you’re gay.” .Gunther says something like, “I considered that but part of me assures I’m not.”.Thus, his physiological response to the presence of an attractive, interested female is indirectly referenced. Ergo, our beloved comic strip is not completely sexless, it just does not directly address the specifics.

I’m not implying teenagers don’t have sex, and quit trying to troll me – you’re about as subtle as your spelling is accurate. .Your scenario was going to the movies some night and having breakfast the morning after. Nancy would ground her for the rest of her life if that occurs, no matter where, so if you never want to see Luann again – and therefore Bernice – just keep on agitating for it.

One problem: anarchy always LEADS to chaos. ALWAYS.It’s laughable to see the cartoonists at Big Head Press promote anarchy when power structures still exist right under their very noses, in the fictional societies they create. Those societies don’t have chaos precisely to the extent they aren’t anarchies.

I admit it was oblique but you don’t need a sledge hammer for every subject..I’m not sure why so many thing every subject needs to be brought up in every situation but that’s just me.. I’m reminded of how some movie critics in times gone by sniffed at assorted movies and called them “escapist”.. My wife said, “If I want reality, I watch the news — which I do. If I want to escape reality or simply be entertained, I figure I should be allowed to enjoy myself without worrying if it’s artsy enough.”

“The annoying thing is I know it should have been accept instead of except.”.I know you knew. It’s just too hard to ignore sometimes, just like when so many think they’re being proper when they use a subjective pronoun in place of an objective pronoun as the object of a preposition. .It wouldn’t be so bad if they weren’t trying to write right..And then there’s there, their, they’re, affect, effect (tricky ones at that), no, know, new, knew, gnu.
