Re; Greg’s blog…he says readers are against sex in a comic strip. Huh?? Is this not America, the Sex Central? Everything on tv is sex. Free accessible porn on internet. Porn mags on shelves at Barnes and Noble. Sex manuals accessible to children on shelves at BN. My middle school kids knew all about sex by 5th grade – ages 11-12. Some even younger. Come on, Greg. You aren’t fooling us. It is YOU who are not comfortable with it being born in a different era. Lynne Johnston addressed it in her strips about Liz and Anthony when they were teenagers and in college with other boyfriends. Not to forget Lawrence – the gay childhood friend and neighbor. Lynne Johnston got a huge backlash about the gay controversy but her strips survived the storm. She still had strong readership. So it is Greg’s own queasiness about addressing sex AND backlash from the conservative readers. I do wish he would be honest about it instead of putting it on us readers.
Oh yes – Off in the distance I can hear it slowly building now that the impatient have finally got their wish. What’s that we hear, certainly by Thursday, but probably sooner, zzzzzzZZZZ – boooorrrrrrinnnng….
Now that’s on file, let’s see… this could have been a Sunday one-shot. What’s tomorrow? Tiffany & Crystal sharing their career goals, or Gunther and Knute chipping in? Maybe Quill reminding Luann of her singing career. Make way for Elwood as he opens up the way to fame & riches.
Actually, what I got out of the new blog posting is that there is going to be some interesting hanky-panky going on in a few weeks, and if the cut-art was not a misdirection, it will be between Quill and Luann! As for today. When I was a wee tyke, I wanted to be “an airplane driver.” Glad to see all the girls eating real sandwiches….
My experience is that Mr. Evans is basing his conclusions on mail that he gets from his readers. Despite whatever reality may exist on the ground, it appears that a majority of Luann readers want to keep the strip sex-free. Just because some here feel differently does not make Evans dishonest.
Greg -I had surgery and had to be in bed for a good part of many days. I started with Luann in 2002 and it kept my attention and sanity for hours. Thank you. MJ
Good for you Luann. That is a good field and you will find plenty of Job opportunities when you graduate.
Then you can go back to your 10th year class reunion and see Tiffany and her unemployed ex-jock husband putting on airs about how important they were in High school :)
Yikes. We’ve gone from Weenie World to the Golden Arches. I thought these girls would be smart enough to eat healthier. Supersize em.To match the boring diets, look how bored their faces are. This is a setup. I hope tomorrow something weird happens at the McDonalds, like the guy in the next booth is watching porn on the McDonalds free wi-fi.
Love to see the girls, Luann Delta and Bernice. Don’t want sex in strip. Not conservative, just sick of getting it shoved down my proverbial throat. Thanks Greg.
I am repeating this remark I made earlier today:-—————————————————-For those of you wanting to see Luann, other than Sunday:Here she is.The comment count for the upcoming week will be interesting. Yesterday’s count was very low, even for a Sunday.
I thought I heard you calling…I have a feeling today’s strip is a setup for Round 2 of the Tiffany went to LA arc – she came back with dreams of being an actress.
To come to think of it, most of the comments are on the comments, not the strip itself. The strip just provides a seed – e.g. Delta wanting to be a lawyer – and the comments grow from there. Comments cause more comments. Sort of like lawyers cause more lawyers.
That depends on how you define “chaos” – as well as “anarchy”. .Gandhi saw his theory of “ordered anarchy” as a minimum of government in a society, others claim that’s an oxymoron, and that “order” has no place in its definiton. The literal meaning of “anarchy” is to be without a leader; the common interpretation is to be without a publically enforced goverment – the implication is that without that social contract in force, public disorder and lawlessness results.
With all due respect to Luann, my first impulse after reading this was to wonder how long she had to practice saying that proposed job title. She never impressed me as being all that academic.
You’d be wrong – it wasn’t just the papers who made the decision, it was the Christian Family Network (Ohio) and the American Family Network (Mississippi) who urged their members to cancel subscriptions and put a lot of pressure on the advertisers. Remember, papers run on advertising. The death threats and hate mail she got were just a fun bonus..Remember, Lawrence came out in ‘93, before comics were on the web. In ’97 (still no web presence) when Lawrence found a partner, the strip was running in 1700 papers, over 100 dropped the strip – some ran it again when the offendingly gay Lawrence wasn’t featured, I don’t know which ones dropped it altogether. .But comparing newspaper syndications now what they were the wouldn’t tell you much since so many papers have folded in the interim. Just to make it more confusing, many papers don’t carry a strip in the actual paper, but include it on their website.
“yadda yadda yadda who’s the blonde yadda yadda yadda we never hardly see her yadda yadda”Thanks, Dave53. My thoughts exactly, but you said it better than I would’ve.
Uh, maybe because they wouldn’t waste their time here since we’re NOT members of the congregation and therefore are not so suggestible to spoon feeding? .Also, “right the letter”? Dude, plz…. Look, people who have a religious or political axe to grind and want to close down something use direct pressure on the wallet – they target the advertisers first, along with members of their congregation that are subscribers, they don’t waste time on the damned.
As for me, lets see Quill and Luann go to the movies and then have breakfast together. The sex does not have to be seen, just implied.
Really? And in whose house is this post-unseen-coital breakfasting supposed to be taking place? You better “imply” an apartment or hotel room, as well as “imply” a landlord who rents to minors or “imply” a credit card that isn’t paid by either of their parents if you hope to see that scenario..And if you’re going to say Brad & TJ’s place, remember that TJ would rat to Nancy in a NY minute.
The sex does not have to be seen, just implied.Hey wait. I thought the singing sessions with the door closed implied sex.Yes, I’m sure of it. The whole “singing” thing was a metaphor, like train going in the tunnel.
Thousands of teens make breakfast in the back of a car? It’s your scenario – we’re not talking outright sex among 16 year olds, but your “implied” version of it, i.e. breakfast the next morning.
“If a church group, such as the Southern Baptists are told by their preachers that something is sinful, they will except it as gospel (Pun) even if it is not.
