I am in that age range and always try to be open minded, but anyone that meets that description isn’t a plugger. Pathetic is the word that comes to mind.
It is rather ironic, isn’t it, that a variety of the comments here suggest that the guy is a “loser”? Isn’t this just the reason many of the “hippies” of the day adopted the anti-establishment look? I know a variety of folks who are in their 60s (males and females) who dress and look like the guy above here at the university, and I suspect the look is still relatively common at most every university town around. Some of these folks are my collegues and are very good, sound, interesting folks. Although I never adopted the long-hair, earring look myself, I ended up adopting my own “look” so-to-speak back when I was young myself and have kept it pretty much since (beard/moustache, pipe smoker, etc).
I live in Southern California, I have several friends their 60 who are running marathons, riding centuries, surfing, and otherwise keeping active and young. I’m active too. Some have pony tails, some have ear rings, many wear aloha shirts. One friend – no pony tail, but otherwise fits the above description pretty well – is 65 and has never held a full time job in his life because it cuts into his surfing and kayaking time – not to mention his time working with his church in outreach activities and working on teaching bicycle safety to local schools.
I think he qualifies as someone who “represent the 80 percent of humanity who unceremoniously keep plugging along — balancing work, play and family life” – it’s just a different balance than others.
I guess that means that you are a Senior Plugger when you can remember when fellows wearing pony tails were known as “young whippersnappers” and “Johnny-Come-Latelys!” In my day, the big hair style shockers were the Mohawk cut, the Pompadour, the Duck Tail, the Crew Cut, the Simple Bubble, the Poodle Cut, and the beehive. NO ONE ever went outside without a hat – that included men AND women. And, if you were going anywhere where you might “see” someone – such as the grocery store – you ALWAYS wore gloves. Women usually added at least a pearl necklace to whatever outfit they were wearing, if they were going anywhere “important” – such as to a PTA meeting or church.
I know I’m old when a plugger is a guy who wears an earring! There was a time before that when pluggers didn’t wear such things unless they were female, then they wore only two!
I know somebody who exactly fits that description, except that he also has a three year old son, a trophy wife and is a millionaire. I assume he doesn’t know he looks ridiculous, or doesn’t care. I agree, he’s no plugger.
Thanks to the last two posters. I’ve worked all my adult life and now that I’m retired I can finally let my hair down. No hearing aid or earrings but the mustache has been with me since ‘74. I wouldn’t recognise that guy in the mirror with the smooth upper lip.

Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rage at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Seems to me pluggers with ponytails only have X chromosomes.

Let this be a reminder to ALL pluggers to let their freak flags fly free.

That’s not a plugger, that’s just an ancient Hippy that can’t move on. Hey Man, the 60s are gone, time to grow up!
