It might even be a bit more symbolic…The first seagull seems to be looking towards the Schooner, but the second seagull scares it off, and seems to stand defiantly as it protects it.Maybe Gus has had enough of waiting for Arlo dragging his feet on deciding (how long has it been in comic strip time?)

bignatefan over 12 years ago
@Bill Tidler Jr: Noone is Peter Noone, Herman of Herman’s Hermits. Everybody knows this.

Arlo wanted to buy a boat for years, but Janice resisted. Now Janice wants the boat and Arlo’s resisting. Sort of. That’s all.

Or, JJ created a filler strip and people are seeing what they want to see (including myself).
Alexthen over 12 years ago
This is like a cigarette (God forbid) after se#. A culmination of desire for a boat that has reached its fulfillment. Saying things without words is what artists do. No need to get all poetic. They bought the boat. MOVE OVER!

Why is the boat not making waves?
Dave459 over 12 years ago
If it wasn’t for gulls, we’d be up to our #$$ in dead fish . . .
kas300 over 12 years ago
But notice both gulls are pooping in panel 3…this symbolism is beyond me.
mbmacneill over 12 years ago
I believe Mr. Johnson realizes that if Arlo and Janice do purchase the boat, he’d have to draw more sea scenes. This is just practice to see if that’s what he wants to do. Easier than drawing a cabin in the mountain scene (my preference).

It’s no big deal. It’s just the sea shore equivalent of crickets chirping becoming audible in the silence.

Hello Neighbors,My parents had a 28’ Columbia sailboat and we spent two years spending good weather weekends out on the Chesapeake Bay. I recall waking to the sound of seagulls as I rose to the sound of roosters at my grandparents house in Mississippi. Seagulls provide an audio ambience to life by the sea as do buoy bells, foghorns, waves patting your boat and/or dock.. And while I agree most seagulls are “flying rats” as some have said, I like to think there’s a few “Jonathons” who just want to fly.Respectfully, C.

3rd panel shows typical seagull behavior; eat, poop and squawk

May have been writer’s block so he drew something simple to buy time! May be nothing more than a dramatic pause? Then again, a seagull may just be a seagull? LOL
jaredmc over 12 years ago
@Dave53 is absolutely right. JJ is not going to let us off the hook and NOT show us the purchase scene. Gus needs to give them the “family price” still! All it is showing is that the first seagull (Arlo) has been wanting the boat and now both seagulls (Arlo and Janis) have decided to buy the boat. That’s why they both look smug—almost smiling—in the last panel. It’s artistic. JJ has license.

Hey, sea gulls have been the soundtrack for many a wonderful vacation….they bring back memories, I enjoy them. I wouldn’t mind coming back as one. I used to look out the forth floor windows of the Lake View Hotel on Mackinac. On windy days they would hover just a couple feet away….just floating……too cool…..

I thought those shapes in panel 3 are feathers or water drops.

Filler ‘toon. J.J. is probably laughing at all the speculation about the ’meaning’ of this one, just like I am.

Hey, WAIT,everyone! Today’s “Arlo and Janis” in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has a line of text along the top of each panel. In the first panel, it says, “What’s wrong, Arlo?”. . . “I don’t know! I feel like Gus is playing games with me!” (2) “But he longer he does, the more I realize we really can’t afford this!” (3) “That explains the mood!” . . . “Sorry, I guess I got up on the wrong side of the bed!” (4) “That’s bad!! The bed on the boat only has one side!” The gulls are still shown in each panel, with the text above.

I just looked up “Arlo and Janis” on news.yahoo.com/comics , and it didn’t show the text there, either! I wonder what the heck is going on.

Where’s the dialog? Checkout the newspaper version, much is being said on the boat.

“before anyone else wastes time checking, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel doesn’t carry A&J”I beg ;your pardon, but I’m holding a newspaper in my hand that says “Milwaukee Journal Sentinel” on the top left of Page 7G, and on the top right it says, Wednesday, June 20, 2012. The next-to-last strip on that page is “Arlo & Janis.”

Reader’s Digest once quoted an old Philly health department head as saying deer are just “big, cute rats with antlers.” Always liked that description.

When I checked in this morning, there was no text, just the drawings. I thought it was lovely, and didn’t try too hard to read any meaning into it; I interpreted it as an “interlude.”
Now the text is showing, and I kind of wish it wasn’t.
By the way, I’ve got nothing against seagulls, or deer, or pigeons, or even rats for that matter. Sure, some of them thrive on garbage, but everything’s gotta eat, and WE’RE the ones who make the garbage.
The deer that nibbles gently on the rose,The bee collecting pollen for the hive,Are Nature’s children, as are all of thoseWho, in our gardens, eat to stay alive. Our world was such a garden long ago,With all creation equal in regard;Yet there were Two ignor’d their Master’s “No!”(Perhaps He should have chained them in the yard.)Did Eve and Adam, breaking God’s tabooBy copping apples, causing mankind’s fall,Hand scape upon the humble hedgehog who,On seeing serpents, curls into a ball?Yes, Man is worse by far than all the rest,Yet dares to call his neighbor “Garden Pest!”© Me

Solution: Ask Gus for a price. Also, I didn’t notice the seagull poop until the text was added. Where we come from that’s why we call them “$h*thawks”.

’Sall right, Dave. I never saw this, either. Funny, news.yahoo.com/comics still has the mistake, along withhttp://seattletimes.nwsource.com/comicsgames/We can give gocomics.com credit for finally getting it right.. (Maybe with our help?)

And Gokie5 as well.It might not have been GoComics error. I’m sure they just publish whatever Mr. Johnson sends them, and I can easily see him sending the wrong file – the illustration before the text is added.

Is it just me, or did this strip not have any words in the panels when it was first shown?

It makes a lot more sense with the words. I wonder why they were left out?

I love this particular strip; it’s so evocative. The high tide mark, the humorous vignette of the seagulls; I can smell the salt air. When I first saw it 11 years ago, it had no dialogue; it was perfect that way.
