Marigold: Z Phoebe: MAAH!!! Marigold" Who? What? Where? Phoebe: I was doing like that scene in "The Godfather." Marigold: What? Phoebe: Next slumber party we're SO watching some movies.
I never saw “The Godfather” either, but my understanding is that there was a scene in which someone woke to find a severed horse’s head in the bed beside him.
That’s right, Iron Ed. Some kind of threat or warning. And the film has an R rating for a very good reason, so John Reiher is right that Phoebe shouldn’t be allowed to watch it.
When the movie came out on tv i was too young to watch it, but I did anyway. A lot of kids get to see things on tv that they really probably shouldn’t. If I get the scene wrong it’s because I am trying to remember 40+ years ago rather than look on imdb, but basically the Godfather was a Mafia Don and the owner of this horse wouldn’t fix a race the mob wanted him to. He thought he had gotten away with standing up to the Godfather, but woke up with his beloved horse’s head in his bed. This showed the power of the Godfather to have just as easily come in and kill him.
Actually, I thought today’s strip was hilarious. I admit, I didn’t see where it was going until she said the Godfather. It is just a cartoon meant to entertain (which in my opinion did), so I don’t bother to ruin the fun by evaluating on rather she would be old enough to see the movie..If I bothered with that , then i would start to focus on a girl interacting with a unicorn.
When I was sixteen, I read the book just before the movie came out. I had friends who had read it a few year before that. Later, I saw the movie during its first run.
Now, Sackett was partially right. The man was a movie producer who hated an actor (who they say was based on Sinatra). The actor wanted a part in a movie, but he reused to cast him because of his disdain. The Corleone family sent people to the producer to talk him into changing his mind. The man refused and even insulted them.
Well, the Corleone motto was, “make an offer you can’t refuse”, which the man did. For a hobby he bred show and race horses. He had one horse in particular that he was really fond of. It was prefect and a good race horse. He was seeing possibilities of Triple Crown in the future. He woke up one morning and blood was all over him and his sheets. He sat up and screamed. Sharing the bed with him was the severed head of his favorite horse.
I really liked your comic today Dana, it is a shame it had to be explained. Of course that is what we old farts are here for.
Who has to have actually seen “The Godfather” in order to have seen references, spoofs, etc, of that scene? That was even parodied in “Despicable Me”! So it’s not unreasonable for Phoebe to have encountered a spoof and had asked to have it explained to her.
Reminds me of one of the Rugrats movies where Angelica accidently saw the Godfather. She put the head of a rocking horse in the twins’ crib to get back at them for getting her doll dirty!
Gees guys. Godfather was just a movie. I thought Marigold’s sleeping head (and pun) was just a hoot!
I have an almost-three-year old, and he’s already seen his father play some violent video games (don’t like it, but he is/was bound to see them anyway) We just have to wait till he’s asleep for the good movies.
the problem is expressing the silliness of having a horse in the house. People are unfamiliar with horses. There are plenty of images of them scratching each others backs, rolling, leaning on things, but none John Q Public is familiar with. Horse-bedroom will be godfather horse every time.
ok problem is ignorance of audience, silliness of 800lb animal in the house, colliding of worlds. Worlds seems most important.
Alright, bed scene: panel 1: M- (sleepy posture) ‘? What else do you do at slumber parties? yawn’ panel 2: P (big grin launching at bed in cannon ball dive) ‘Bonzai!’ M bug eyes or curious eyes. 1/2 panel 3: sound effect lettering ’ BABOOM Crash.’ Panel 4: litter debris all over kitchen Phoebe hangs by panties from ceiling fan. Mom (outside frame) ‘No monkeys jumping on the bed.’ M (underneath debris small script) ‘4 ricochets moan.’

I agree, Marigold. What? Someone tell me this “The Godfather” scene to which Phoebe was referring.

First off, Phoebe is way too young to have seen or to have been allowed to see “The Godfather”.

gimmickgenius totally predicted this yesterday.

It took me a few seconds to understand today’s strip. At the third panel I wondered “isn’t this strip aimed at kids?”
Then I had a good laugh.
sjsczurek over 12 years ago
It was a horse named “Khartoum.” Mr. Wolz was going to put him out to stud, not to race. He expected, I reckon, to make a good pile of money doing it.
Pity that poor horse!

What is the effect of human horror movies on a mythical beast? Soap operas? Pepsi commercials? Does she have more sense than this child’s guardians.

When I finally got around to seeing the Godfather, I had to close my eyes through the “horse head” scene until my husband told me it was safe.

Why is she watching “The Godfather” if she’s in the fourth grade?
But who am I to critisize this strip?
(Nice job, Dana ;)

I noticed this strip wasn’t included in the book collections. Is it because of the implications of a nine year-old having seen The Godfather?
