In “Jetan”, or Martian Chess, as described by Edgar Rice Burroughs in “The Chessmen of Mars”, the Princess piece, just once per game, is allowed to move to any square on the board, in the “Escape” move.
I do see the similarities… we’ve already had a comic where the drawing style changes to show the imaginative game the characters are playing a la Tracer Bullet or Spaceman Spiff. Both animal friends are seen differently by the main characters than by the world at large. Both animal friends even have a similar haughty/smug tendency at times. But I am enjoying this strip immensely, and I don’t think it’s a problem to see similarities. Artists influence each other. It happens in all genres, so if the result is good art (and I think this is), then there’s no harm in saying, Hey, looks like you were influenced by…. In fact, if I were a cartoonist and someone compared my strip to Calvin and Hobbes, I’d probably take it as a compliment. But then, that’s just me.
Don’t feel bad Marigold. I don’t know how to play chess either.
I love this comic. I can see where some people get a little Clavin and Hobbes feel to it (magical creature befriends lonely child, while the rest of the world considers it to be an “imaginary friend”) but I think this is new, fresh, and fun!

I have already read all of the ones on here and I first heard about this comic yesterday! And I do have to say, this isn’t as girly as I thought.

So, do the same with one of your pawns Phoebe, and tell her its developed mutant powers.

Maybe Marigold’s cousin on steroids? Or something?

For those who aren’t yet familiar with Dana’s style & humor, I sincerely recommend you peruse her previous strip’s archives.

But doesn’t Marigold need to Knight the pawn first?
Or am I thinking of the Knights who say ni?

The board is set up wrong. The white squares go in the right hand corners. (Yes, this is a rule.)

For the record I don’t mind the C&H comparison. Not everybody gets to be compared to the master at all, you know.

Oh, even a negative comparison to Watterson is a compliment.
