And there’s the big payoff Batiuk was building to all week: a callback to the pizzeria in “Funky Winkerbean.” Well, that was certainly worth the effort. Let’s not even get into the question of what kind of simpleton burns garbage in the fireplace.
Place your bets on next week: school bus driving, Lillian the Lizard, bowling, the Valentine Theatre, Dale Evans, Becky showing up to sell Thanksgiving band turkeys, or (please, no!) Silver Age comics.
Okay, you haters of us haters, strap yourself in because—This is actually funny! It acknowledges that Montoni’s was Westview’s Number One pizza place because there was no other one. It’s also 100% old art, but shouldn’t we all be recycling? I just checked, EDT 130AM, and in Medina it’s 55F. Why are they shivering in clear hypothermia while dressed like it’s January on Hoth? Love Pam and “My house is burning down! Which scarf should I accessorize with? Oh, not red, it’ll clash with the fire truck and the flaming roof…Hmm…hmm…” And YES, the pizza box joke is funny, I can’t deny that.
In “Funky Winkerbean” we saw Ed was in a nursing home and practically unresponsive. Yet here, AFTER Montoni’s has closed so this takes place after the timeline in FW, he’s much younger and fine.
So I came close to calling it a couple of days ago:
“With the amount of grease on a typical Montoni’s pizza, there’s about to be a fireball that will be visible from the Space Station.”
But Batty actually remembered that he closed the Funky pizzeria. Well, time to rebuild the house again. Good thing Pmm and Jff are independently wealthy.
Unfortunately, it looks like Ed’s granddaughter, her husband, and his great-grandkid, ̶1̶0̶-̶y̶e̶a̶r̶-̶o̶l̶d̶ ̶3̶-̶y̶e̶a̶r̶-̶o̶l̶d̶ whatever-age-he-last-was Mitch did not survive the fire. Oh well, more Ed collateral damage.
With the devastating fires in Lahaina, Canada, California and other places becoming more frequent, it’s painful to read this comic. I wish they would drop the whole “Oh Dad is a Pyro, how cute” story line. It’s NOT cute.
It’s funny because while this is going on, a family of four is dying in their fiery upstairs bedrooms across town because the truck that they needed was tied up with Crank again. Hello, Pulitzer!

That’s because Montoni’s used grease straight from the local Texaco station’s service bay.

I find it hard to believe any pizza place can be greasier than Montoni’s.
