Yeah, that’s the problem with spackled ceilings. There are lots of troubling spots to stare at.

Madeline has that thoughtful daydreamy look of Petey accepting a… Reuben Award? Well, why not!?

Reminds me of my first ever ‘learn to read’ book, way back in …hm…1953? “Oh, look. Look look, see Spot. See Spot run.” Only in this case, Spot isn’t going to run…

Someone should buy “Pete” (I wonder if Loris will continue to call him that?!?!) a set of those glow in the dark stars that I think you can still get at Spencers if you are lucky enough to live near a mall which is still open. They are usually near the lava lamps and neon lights.

Leave it to the mom to try and be positive (and hide her disappointment ;)

A wallpapered ceiling with old roof leaks can make for some interesting spots.

If you spend your evening drawing a 15-page comic, will you have any time left to stare at the spot? It might end up not being about something that happened today.

If you stare at the spot long enough, it might be a city full of tiny people as in “Horton Hears A Who”. But Petey isn’t Doctor Seuss, so maybe not. He could make shoebox dioramas and draw them.

That saves mom the trouble of scrubbing the spot off. She hates standing on ladders.

I’m surprised it’s only going to be 15 pages, but I guess any more ambitious and it wouldn’t be boring.

Madeline’s non-reaction in panel 3 expresses why she is such a fine mother: she knows her boy and all his neuroses. And Alice of course is right: Mr. Other Spinnerack’s assignment is tailor-made for Petey!
