Nice interlude!

Chicken contest?

That’s one for the birds.

Is this a story intro? B.O.‘s attempt to win a contest that turns into a criminal case? The Annie story is about to hit the ground running from what we’ve been told, but I am wondering if this chicken thing will turn out to be more than a simple interlude.

Maybe the neighbor is Annie’s kidnapper?

Only a minor comment tonight. I’ve enjoyed Joe Staton’s artwork since I first saw it on E-Man at Charlton Comics a few decades back, but something does not seem quite right in Tracy’s facial expressions today. They are good expressions but they just don’t seem to fit my vision of Tracy which began in the mid to late 1940s when Gould was at his best on the strip. . Nevertheless, I am enjoying the present art and adjusting my vision to the changes in little things like this.

Now if they could somehow incorporate “The Famous Chicken” (formerly The San Diego Chicken) into a storyline as a guest, that would be something. And WW, you’ve done it again. Nice.

Are the last two days the first time B.O. has actually said the word “Tracy” (correctly)? I can’t remember him doing it before and apparently DIck can’t either. B.O. apparently hasn’t noticed that he has this trait.

Now how will a chicken contest tie in to the next criminal caper for Dick Tracy? Will it lead to a rooster fighting ring?

So my comment from yesterday that BO finally got Tracy’s name right has been dismissed. Good one. Mike.

Dick Tracy is caught up in a Remington Steele-like moment here, with humor and criminal behavior rubbing shoulders. I’ll throw out a guess that the Chicken Contest somehow involves a scam and a bad guy who leads to other, more big-time bad guys, who will cough up clues to the whereabouts of Annie. Tracy, though, will have to turn his infamous blind eye when Punjab and the Asp apply their specialized techniques of persuasion (making Jack Bauer look like a choirboy).

I’ve got it! Annie was hypnotized by the Great Voltaro (Gasoline Alley, March 11) and doesn’t know who she is, and she is being hidden in Gasoline Alley (Gasoline Alley, June 2)! She will rescue Boog from the bullies (Gasoline Alley, June 3) and Tracy will be called to the elementary school to deal with the disturbance.

That is one chicken that the Colonel won’t get!

I can see a crossover featuring CHICKEN LITTLE coming! C.L. (as they call him in tracyville) will run around yelling “the sky is falling, the sky is falling” and tracy will, naturally, investigate since C.L. is B.O.‘s prize chicken. After four or five weeks of intense investigation, it will be discovered that, indeed the sky IS falling.. however, it will be due to the returning of THE SPACE COUPE.. complete with the skeletal (and cobweb laden) remains of zy ghote, s. tim sail, and that sputnik goon.

the “renegade moon citizens” who were shown at the end of the franken-mindy story, will shanghai the coupe and commandeer it back to their beloved moon valley which they will find has been reconstructed and taken over by… BLACKJACK!!! that’s right.. since tracy let blackjack get away, he’s managed to find a way to the moon (probably by ticking off ralph kramden no doubt) and he has declared himself “MOON RULER” (not to be confused with “MOON TAPE MEASURE” of course).

tracy shows up on the moon (because diet smith, despite his insistance to tracy that he dismantled the moon project.. kept an active sace coupe in his garage) and a gunfight ensues ebtween him and blackjack. Blackjack surrenders willingly, asking.. again.. to be allowed to shoot tracy’s hat off before being arrested.

the SHOCKING TWIST to the story is that… LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE os blackjack’s “MOON QUEEN” and she opts to stay on La Luna to rule with a strong hand and soft words :)

I have never been much of a B.O. Plenty fan, but seeing him name a chicken after Tracy and even getting the last name right is amusing. I like the looks on Tracy’s face.

This has to be fun for Mike Curtis since he has chickens.

Lot of great comments today!

I love Joe’s art on Tracy today! Instead of the usual jutting jaw, resolute and determined, today Tracy looks bemused and confused, the way we all do when we’re dealing with B.O. and his family. He looks very human today (very Ralph Byrd), and not a, well, cartoon character.

Those were lyrics from an old Ozark Mountain Daredevils song:

HINTS, SPOILERS AND OTHERWISE DICK TRACY NEWS.

I am starting the conclusion of the Annie crossover. It’s a long story, but the characters warrant it. Afterwards, we’ll catch up with the Tracy cast that didn’t show up in it. Sparkle and Junior’s baby will be born around Christmas, and play a part in the return of the Nitrates.

One of the early ideas Joe and I had for Tracy was to introduce some romance for Vitamin Flintheart, so that will happen in the story after Annie. That tale also has a real life guest star I cannot mention yet. In the spring, we’re going to go after the Blackhearts full steam. We have yet to introduce the third associate of the team, APOLLO. He will show up soon after Annie.

Joe and I and the rest of the team are really putting our best foot forward on the big Annie adventure, and we think it might be some of our best work. It’s going to be a lot different than most of Tracy’s adventures, and you’ll soon learn why.

Mysta shows up later this week and BO Plenty and Gravel Gertie have a surprise tomorrow, and a bigger one comes in their mail.
