Joe’s apparently making a conscious effort not to merge disparate art styles here, with his more intricately rendered Tracy contrasted rather starkly against both the background characters and Fosdick.
Fosdick’s keen sense of the Law enabled him to realize that Kitchen, already a felon, had just robbed the BANK in the background and was escaping the poor marksmanship of the bank guard giving ineffective chase. So he drew, fired, and ventilated the dastard, while continuing to converse with Tracy. Fearless Fosdick is one sharp cookie! And who is this alliterative Caliph?
It looks like we are back to Joe’s inking again this week. I imagine this whole sequence had to be pre-approved by Capp Enterprises, so that makes sense to me.
There is a bit of a spoiler in the fine print of the credits as to the identity of the villain, but that topic was already discussed here if you’ve been reading all the comments.
The cases of The Atom Bum (not “bomb” as today’s strip reads), Anyface, and the Chippendale Chair were all featured in the volume Fearless Fosdick [vol. 1] published by Denis Kitchen. (Note that “Denis” only has one n in his name.)
Note on Tracy’s vacation (after he wakes up): Iceland will be closed tomorrow to allow the population to sober up after beating England in the UEFA Cup soccer match today! England will also be closed due to the ritual burning of England manager Roy Hodgson…mostly in effigy but you never know.
It’s short like normal. Denis is the usual way of spelling that name in French, but in French it’s pronounced deh-NEE. I don’t have any idea why Mr. Kitchen’s given name is spelled that way. Also, until this week, I didn’t know that Kitchen Sink Press came from someone’s name. Obviously, I have a lot to learn.
There are two Kitchen collections of Fosdick, and they’re well worth having, even in addition to the Li’l Abner reprints. I met Kitchen at a con in ‘84, and he was nice enough to say he remembered my mom, who actually visited him at the office once on a cross-country trip—a big fan of the Spirit (and I wouldn’t mind a bit if Denny Colt showed up here).

Is that one criminal supposed to be Dennis Kitchen of Kitchen Sink Comics?

It must have taken a small miracle to get Al Capp’s estate to let Mike use Fosdick. For which we are grateful.

So, for the next few days, we’re practically inside a MAD MAGAZINE parody.

I like the look and feel of today’s strip, with humor added in. Off to a great start.

That’s the Atom BUM Fosdick took down, not the Atom Bomb.

Note that in the current Fearless story on gocomic’s Lil Abner, Fosdick is wearing a fedora, not a bowler, and looking VERY Tracy-ish.

That was a good one, JPuzzleWhiz! Hard enough to keep the tongue twisters straight, but trying to keep a straight face, too, is tricky!

Mr. Kitchen is the one who really put underground comics (or “comix”) on the map.

Why is Fearless Fosdick drawn in such an exaggerated way? Al Capp drew him closer to Tracy than that.
