Knowing Mike’s writing style, tomorrow, we’ll either get a preview of the next story, or Tracy and Bones will hurl exposition at each other for 4 panels and then shoot at each other and we won’t know who was shot till Monday and it won’t be fatal.
Man, they really want us to believe that Tracy can’t tell the voice of his biggest imaginary friend!
It does look like it’s wrapping up pretty soon, though.
The spider has his fly in the web, and since we know that Tracy can’t die, the only thing that could stretch this out now is if Mike goes for a chase scene.
The silhouette successfully disguised his looks and Tracy apparently didn’t hear anything amiss in his voice, so I guess Mr. Bones’ plan has worked so far and he has Blackjack’s gun ready to do the deed at very close range.
The colours all look correct today, too, as they did yesterday. Do we dare to hope that they won’t confusingly change from the Sunday ones from here on? Maybe it’s too much to hope, but I hope so.
If I ignore the unlikelihood of Tracy not realizing that’s not Blackjack’s voice (He’s tired, Bones is an impersonator, it’s a tape recording, etc.) and of Tracy’s flawed macho man solo act (backup?? I don’t need no stinking backup!) then today’s strip is quite good.
1-DT:Oh my. A driver in distress. In a bad neighborhood. Late at night. He’ll probably be ok…
2-TRAVOLTA: STOP! MY UBER DRIVER GOT SICK OF ME AND RAN OFF WITH THE KEYS!
DT:Crap. To Protect And Serve. I guess I oughta do one of those today.
3-TRAVOLTA: OH THANK YOU KIND SIR! I’m trying to hotwire the car so I can get to my personal jet but the only tool I have is this microphone my friend gave me.
DT: Did I hear you say “personal jet”? And you’re driving this car? And you’re dressed like that? And you think that gun is a microphone? Let’s take my car to the nearest nut hatchery, shall we?
TRAVOLTA: GUN???
DT: WHAT? WHERE? OH! Don’t scare me like that!!!
Please keep in mind that this is a 6:30 AM effort and grade accordingly which is to say – on a STEEP curve
Well, the thought balloon in the first panel tells us that Tracy thinks this is Blackjack and not someone possibly posing as him. But certainly after all these years, Tracy would ask for backup – just in case, right? Oh, wait…
Tracy is suspicious and checking our if this is really Blackjack. Otherwise, I don’t think Tracy engages much in smalltalk with bank robbing jailbreakers from Federal prison.
Today’s strip once again presents what others have noticed is sometimes a shortcoming in Mike’s writing … the characters often don’t seem to recognize each other’s voices, or realize when someone is speaking in a voice different than when they’ve heard them before. Or maybe Mike is starting to get a little sloppy, & maybe just getting bored with the strip..
I dunno. This does not look good for Tracy. All outward signs are that he is falling for Richard Bonhomme’s ruse. Bones has Blackjack’s pistol at the ready, and Tracy is close and well-illuminated.
We can only hope that somehow either Tracy suspects and has his own gun at the ready in a trenchcoat pocket or that some last-second intervention will save him. Maybe the real Blackjack has escaped his sweaty plastic wrap and is “the cavalry” (even if still mostly unclad). Or maybe someone totally unexpected will appear as a deus ex machina, such as, I dunno, Briar Rose? Fritz Ann Dietrich? Peaches? Nosy Wendy Wichel? Chumbawamba? Sam?
So close is Mr. Bones going to use a gut shot or a head shot? Hmm…no silencer. I suppose nobody is up that late but on second thought they do seem be in an isolated area.
