Back when I still smoked, I would collect the Marlboro Miles and cash them in. Somewhere around here I still have a soft-sided lunch bag I got from them.
Christopher Columbus first notes in his journal the smoking of tobacco by the Indians. He and his crew had been given tobacco as a gift the previous month, but didn’t know what to do with it, until they witnessed, “men and women with a half-burnt weed in their hands, being the herbs they are accustomed to smoke.”The sailors who tried it, soon found themselves addicted. Upon returning to Spain, one of the sailors who took up smoking, Rodrigo de Jerez, was jailed by the Spanish Inquisition, for it was believed that only the Devil could blow smoke from his mouth and nose. By the time he was released seven years later, smoking tobacco had caught on in Europe.
We kept the other smoking herb for ourselves. Native Americans also showed the colonizers how to keep their corn free off pests by planting alternating rows of tobacco and corn. The nicotine kills the bugs. The demand for tobacco helped spark the slave trade and in 1619 the first boat full of slaves reached North America.
Can we have a class in, say junior high, that carefully instructs future consumers that advertisements are NOT designed with their welfare, physical, mental or any other kind, in mind but is SOLELY designed to extract as much money as possible from them regardless of the consequences to themselves? Oh never mind.
