I guess being bigger than a bear is as good as any other goal in life.

Another trick is to stay the heck out of the woods.

Around here, though, we’ve frequently had bears crossing the sidewalk on the way back to the woods. I may not have looked big, but I guess I didn’t look appetizing.

There’s the old joke about two hikers who confront a bear. One hiker bends down to lace up his shoes. The other hiker asks: Do you think you can outrun that bear?. The first hiker replies: No, but I think I can outrun you.

When black bears are in the vicinity I put on my grandfather’s old stovepipe hat. Now if only I had his old ear trumpet and walking stick.

The experts also say Ralph is WAY overweight. Obese, even.
