It’s still better than spending two days making the costume by hand and then having him change his mind.

Exactly what I was thinking, ckcsmum. People will always change their mind. You just have to set the parameters up front (i.e. “This is it! I’m not buying/making anything else.)

We’ve actually always made them – though this year is the last (they’re too old now). In all those years there was never a complaint. The only problem was when we went to a costume contest and lost – then the judge came up afterward and said their costumes would have won except prizes were only for homemade, and they assumed ours were store bought because they looked too professional. When we told him we made them, he apologized. Oh well.

Sorry Michael but you don’t have the option of changing your mind. This is the one we got and this is the one you will wear, that’s it!

yeah - you were supposed to meet that sweet lovely young librarian at the post office honey - they are all military guys there - they would spot an ‘insert’ before IT even walked in the door.

We used to get pieces for costumes at the thrift store. We did Tom Sawyer one year and he got athlete’s foot (which he’s been fighting ever since) from the work boots we bought for the costume. That put an end to that practice.

Um, depends on where you got it - those seasonal Halloween stores that pop up this time of year have firm “All Sales Final” policies.

One of my boys loves to make his own costume, the more obscure the better (think Caulfield in Frazz). There was one year where he had to explain himself a bunch of times during the school parade, so he changed his mind and went as a ninja for ToT that night (from stuff we had at home). But except for that one year, he has always thrived on the obscurity. The younger ones are coming over to the “home made is best” mindset. And since they’re still of an age to play dress up on occasion, I don’t even mind the “changed my mind for Halloween” episodes - we still get lots of use of the costumes and accessories.

Michael sure was a brat in his younger days. Time for Elly to mom up, sort him out and put him right.

Geez, Elly could just wear her panel 4 face for Halloween and not have to wear a costume - she’d scare a lot of kids!!

This is why i start trying to decide in early September.
