well this is probably before those papers’ time – same with you, duck, no internet, she can’t send her article off online like you can now. Babysitting, yes, she does need peace to write.

Elly had enough guts to ask! That’s a step in the right direction!

And that’s a no. You’ll have to do it out of love, Elly.

Elly needs to tell her boss goodbye. Nothing kills the love of a job faster than knowing you’re being deliberately taken advantage of.

Republicans expect her to work for free so her salary can go towards more tax breaks for the wealthy.

Remember that this strip is being re-run from the 1980s. Writers volunteered for these small papers and computers cost $10,000 back then.

If seems to me that you folks who spend so much time worrying about who has the money or how evil the money is are at least as fixated on money as the folks who have it. And that says very clearly that you and they are different only in your possession of or lack of money and would behave similarly to each other were your places exchanged. You’re both possessed by money, and I would wager that the complainers are more obsessed than the wealthy.

If it’s something you love, you will do it for free. There is a reward in doing a good job and helping someone out, or just admiring your own work that’s now “out there”. She’s married to a dentist for heaven’s sake! I can’t believe she’s begging for money.

summerdog: So, sponge off hubby is the proper role for a woman? You are a half century behind times, at least!

Q: “Elly – can one really assess the value of our gratitude?”A: “Yep – bupkis.”

Take into account, y’all, that FBFW is being recycled. Johnston had started the strip in the 70’s. It’s being re-introduced to a newer audience. She’s likely taking 1970’s liberties—-not writing the strip as Elly doing things ‘online’.

Indeed, the ol’ double standard. Writers, ministers and musicians are supposed to provide their services to the rank and file without compensation. But just ask the rank and file to do their 9 to 5 drill for free and watch the howls of indignation.

Now that you mention it, I’ll send you an invoice to tell you how much your gratitude is worth to me.

A low paying job is better than no job at all. Unless the government pays more for being unemployed.

Minimum wage laws do not force employers to hire people. All it says that if someone gets hired, he must be paid the legally mandated minimum. If the labor or skills of a job applicant is not valued that the govenrment-demanded minimum, the applicant does not get hired and stays unemployed.
