I am not sure how to go with this one. On the one hand, I would not want to have a giant fake spider hanging over the table where I was about to eat food, so I am with Elly on this. On the other hand, I have to recognize the industry of Michael in being able to get the spider hung off the ceiling in the first place. He deserves some congratulations for that.
As for the joke, that part is the part which is the creepiest. It seems like Michael thinks his mother is a poor housekeeper because there is a spider in the house. On the one hand that does not line up with all those strips we have seen of Elly cleaning where the only thing that gets in her way of having a clean house is her mess-making family. But on the other hand, I have to appreciate that the giant green drapery holding the spider has never before been seen in the Patterson dining room. I think it must be a ghost drapery or a spooky drapery. Scary!!
I now live in Florida and that’s how we feel about geckos on our lanai. Even though we are screened in, these little fellas get inside. They are so cute….and they eat any bugs that get in. In fact, the other day I had a tickling on my neck….swatted it away. It was a beetle! As the beetle hit the lanai screen, not one but TWO geckos made a dash from nowhere and fought over eating him!
When weeding my rock garden, a momma wolf spider came jumping out. She sparkled like a jewel. It took me a few seconds to realize her back was covered with her babies. All those eyes were reflecting the sun. Awesome.
Re roaches: Remember Roach Motels? I put one in the basement and didn’t check it for a couple weeks. When I checked it, only a fraction of it was left! Judging by the remains and the hair left in it, a mouse got caught in it and gnawed his way out!
Back when I lived in Sedona,Az. they shot parts of a movie that involved tarantula spiders ( Tarantulas: The Deadly Cargo 1977 ). I somehow acquired a couple of the prop spiders, which, although larger than our native tarantulas, were extremely lifelike (hairs, fangs, and all).
I kept them for years, hanging around the office or perched on my desk, along with a stuffed rattlesnake.
chain gang macho here….I can handle any of that creepy crawler crap….Unless it’s crawling on my face or near my ears….Whimp City…. Hey at least I am Honest!…..How’s about you?…..

I would never harm a spider in my home – they get rid of all the bad insects.

That is true that Elly likes live spiders. She yelled at Michael and Gordon for their cruelty in attempting to cook a spider in the microwave.

If we upped the global oxygen content from 21% to 35% they just might grow that large…
