Don’t worry, Elizabeth. You’ll meet him in about a year or so, only you won’t recognize him as “The One” until about ten years after that. So you’ve got plenty of time!
The first appearance of Anthony Caine. Anthony’s hair in the beginning was coloured a sort of burgundy red, like this guy is in Panel 4. As time went on, his hair got blonder and blonder. In his next appearance, Anthony will lose the buck teeth and grow a few freckles; but otherwise he will look just like this guy. Welcome to the comic strip, Anthony.
Isn’t it quaint that this comic isn’t updated to modern times and that there was a time that the girls only thought that they would be marrying guys instead of marrying same sex couples?
Does it matter? Most young people’s first marriages nowadays are based on so many illusions about “love, happiness, marriage, children” – that they end in divorce. Or couples hanging on in quiet desperation… Has anyone noticed that most girls are from a very young age already projecting themselves into a future which is all about wedding, rings, dresses, children, families – whatever. Most guys only begin to think this way once they have actually met someone and fallen for her. The dissonance is part of the problem.
When my mother was a young teenager, one day she was walking with her mom when a very distinctive car (“the ugliest car I’ve ever seen,” Mom told me) drove by. The driver beeped his horn & waved; Mom waved back. That turned out to be my dad. Fast forward many years: One day, when I was a young teenager, I was at my sister’s wedding. We were all standing outside taking pictures when a very distinctive car drove by. The driver beeped his horn & waved; I waved back. That turned out to be my husband.
That would have been funnier to show the girls future grooms walking by them as a Japanese guy with a “Rising Sun” bandanna seen during World War 2 and the other a white guy with camo pants and a T-shirt with the flag of the Army of Northern Virginia.
I used to think about this all the time as a teenager. Finally met him in Switzerland. I was living in Utah… kind of a cool story how we met! Who would have thought I would find my spouse halfway across the world and not just down the block? :D
I recall several girls in junior high school who looked pretty awful, but by junior year in high school (at the latest) were gorgeous. I’m sure there were guys like that too (I wasn’t paying attention at the time). So, you never know what’ll develop (pun not intended but appreciated).
“Dorky” at that age isn’t relevant. I was about as dorky a girl as you could imagine even into the first couple of years of high school. I improved through college, and by my mid 20’s was actually attractive when working as an executive secretary. (The opinion of others, not just myself, lol). I have known guys with the same history. Even those who remain “dorky” can be very good friends and husbands. A clean, neatly groomed person doesn’t have to look like they’re from Hollywood to be attractive. Behavior rates much higher!
Didn’t Lynn Johnston already do this one. When Phil and Georgia got married, Elizabeth was saying to herself that there is a boy out there growing up to become her husband. The only difference was that Michael then opened the door and shouted at the top of his lungs “Run away kid, while there is still time”.
There is no way in hell Dawn’s parents would even think of her seeing one of the boys in the last panel, or any white boy for that matter. The Japanese are serious about racial purity.

I hope you young ladies choose carefully. Once you get hitched, it’s supposed to be for life. It’s a very serious commitment.

No one makes you marry anyone. It is a choice you both make, good or bad.
