Years ago, our neighbors had an indoor-outdoor cat who was very friendly, and I would pet her and give her cat treats when I saw her. One day, I heard this scratching on the front door, and it was the neighbor’s cat looking for treats and attention! It became an almost daily occurrence, but she was sweet, so I looked forward to seeing her.
Make it easy on yourselves. They make doggie bells that you lay on the ground with a big button for them to push. No more scratching, just the pleasant ring to tell you the dog wants in. They come in pairs so it can be used to tell you when the dog wants out.
In the second panel, I am impressed that Edgar can stand like that without supporting his body with the other paw. In the third panel, I am impressed Elly can stand like that with no lower body.

Just be happy Elly

Elly, in exchange for cleaning up a bit of dirt, you get a dog who won’t annoy the neighbors. Fair trade…

Leave it to Elly to see the dark side of everything!

Smart dog. Smarter than the owners.

You know the only reason Edgar ranged the doorbell was because he’s been scratching the door!

Why does she always go to the negative?! APPRECIATE his cleverness! Very smart dog, and YOU reinforced his behavior! Sometimes she is upsetting.

What does Elly want anyway? Edgar is a dog. Dogs do that.

Not as big an error as John marrying YOU, Elly. How does anyone tolerate your eternal glass-half-empty attitude!?

I think it’s pretty fricking cool, I’m stuck with a doggy door.

Stop the constant criticism of Elly. She is a cartoon character. It’s disturbing to always read your negative thoughts. Lighten up.

I just noticed the silhouette of Edgar’s ears remind me of Dr. Seuss— Horton Hears a Who

Okay, now let’s see Edgar ride atop a horse, like in the circus….
