I never learned how to play chess, but for some reason both of my daughters wanted to play. They started by computer, but then their school had an after school program, which they joined. They’re actually pretty good now.

I can teach someone how to play chess in about 15 minutes. There are only so many pieces and they can only move in so many ways.
Teaching one how to play chess well is an entirely different story.
