And remember, only 15 out of 18 spots on the team are taken.

How is he ever supposed to improve if he never gets a chance to play?

Is this a big league dugout? No spitting? Or are these boys dipping and chewing?

Remember Peter, the benchwarmer always comes in at the last moment to win the game and gets the prettiest cheerleader in the movies.

Ask me why I hate competitive sports and I’ll tell you about the little league coach who ridiculed kids who didn’t play as well as his son did. They’d make fun of you but weren’t interested in helping you become a better player.

The story is a hard one. Many of us have felt as Peter felt in the last frame – that we aren’t good enough, particularly in something we desperately want to be good enough at. At the same time just getting to play is not really satisfying for many because it exposes how bad we might be. We want kids to have discipline and “gumption” to persevere against adversity and encourage hard work to improve and develop talent rather than rely on it. … But at the same time, as parents it can be hard to see the emotional toil this takes kids through. We do the best that we can – but at least for me this one resonates for me BOTH in my mind as the player and as the parent.

I thought that was the position he held before. Have they re-started the reruns?
