    An alternate explanation that I had heard (and made sense to me) was that at the end of the play when the actors go out on stage and if the audience liked their performance they would take a bow. In taking the bow you need to bend the knee which is also breaking the leg.

    “Break a leg” is to foil the Evil Eye, who will assume the target already has enough trouble and pass by. “Daft as a brush…”
