Actually, Mrs. Olsen probably would appreciate not having to face grading Christmas assignments on first day back to school. Those papers never turn out well because students’ thoughts are not with the assignment.
I don’t suppose it’s occurred to anyone that this was Mrs. Olsen’s plan all along. She knows Caulfield at this point, so this way she gets out of assigning vacation homework without compromising her reputation as the “mean” teacher.
Here is why I’m glad humans are at least a little bit full of themselves: After Dickens wrote “A Christmas Carol,” there really was no need for anybody to write another Christmas book. But Dr. Seuss didn’t seem to believe so, and we are all the richer for it.

Teachers don’t assign homework according to time left in the period. Caulfield just saved Mrs Olsen some work on the last day before holidays began.
If I were the teacher and wanted to assign any homework, I’d anyway have done it before Caulfield started to read!

The other kids are thinking that if it wasn’t for Caulfield, they could’ve left a half hour early.

This is elementary school. Give the kids a break. There will be plenty of over-holiday break homework assignments in middle and high school.

If you have students riding the bus, you really have to know when they are being let out in advance.
