Steely Dan? I think they were a thing after I grew past caring a lot about rock n roll.

About the band name… from the wiki: “Fagen and Becker named the band after a ‘revolutionary’ steam-powered dildo mentioned in the William S. Burroughs novel Naked Lunch.”

My musical memories go back about a quarter century earlier than Mr. Spaetzle’s, and I can very definitely empathize with his final comment. Whenever I mention music or musicians from my era, the result is blank stares. My inner self just says if they only knew. Thank goodness for 45’s, LP’s, and other recordings, and my children who learned to listen and enjoy.

I make a similar comment to our patients when they make a reference to something culturally “older”, except it’s usually that they’re lucky that I’m old(57) and I get that reference! It just amazes me anymore things that are no longer mainstream.

Hey, 19 bought back an embarrassing moment from the beginning of my divorced life.

I had to look it up. 1980, so I was 19 that year as well. I don’t look as old as principal whatever his name is, do I?

When my grand kids were little they found my LP collection. “PaPa, what’s this?” “Sweetheart, that’s how they used to store music.” “How many songs?” “Usually 7 on a side.” “So big. . . So few.” Sigh. . . . .

We had tix for the Dan in Detroit.Day of the show our car broke down.No replacement.We found out show was canceled.Bummed no show in future.Oh well.Still love their music ;)

When I was in college, the Beatles released “When I’m Sixty-Four”. It seemed so far away then. Now it’s 10 years ago. Oh well.

So he was born in 1967. Can he be a Plugger at 53? Seems youngish from my perspective.

When I listen to almost any Steely Dan song (they’re one my top fave groups) the bluesy riffs and lyrics remind me of the underside of the party life (girls languid and bittersweet). Alluring and depressing at the same time. I remember those days in the late 70s: It’s 4 AM and the party almost seems surreal, with a lonely people trying to connect. (nothing but blues and Elvis, and somebody else’s favorite song). (get up when the sun goes down, cover every game in town). (all your low rent friends are dead—-you’re obsolete—look at all the white men in the street….) and so on.

The older I get the more I relate.
