If it involves a computer, whatever’s supposed to take 60 seconds often ends up taking all day. Mysterious bugs appear, you dig through help files, you have to download and install updates you’ve never heard of, you learn how to use features you’re unfamiliar with as workarounds for the known bugs that haven’t been fixed in five years…
I had to put some air in my front tires on the truck this morning. It took longer to get my compressor unpacked and packed back up than it took to fill the tires.
People will think of any excuse to put something off. Once I made a coworker laugh because he was trying to get out of doing something so he spent the better part of 30 minutes teaching me how to do it because I had nothing else to do and he asked if I could do this task for him that day. By the time he had finished teaching me I looked at him and said, “The task itself only takes 5 minutes but it took you 30 to show me how to do it. In that amount of time, you could have saved 25 minutes by just doing it yourself!” (And yes, I know once he trained me, I would have been able to help in the future too, but it was a one-off request for me to help him. I just happened to be free at that moment)
“Do it right away.” Yes. But how many people don’t do it the right way. Then they have to take the next 10 minutes to fix it and do it the way they should have to begin with.
Been thinking about this since I saw it over 24 hours ago. WHY if it can be done in “X” amount of time, why NOT go ahead and do it. “X” being whatever you decide. For me, X shall be 3 minutes. Thanks JEF, thanks FRAZZ, thanks Caulfield. Making this bad boy one of my “Saved Comic Strips” right away.

In the time it takes to calculate the time something will take, it could already be all or almost all completed.

I’d comment, but it would take too long.

Sorry, Caulfield, but according to GTD creator David Allen, it’s a TWO-minute rule!! :)

Replace “estimated” with “rationalized” and it is a more accurate illustration of Caulfield’s mindset.

When you follow the 60-second rule, take a minute to decide how long it will take.
