A friend on mine who played Edger Bergen (as well as Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd) loved telling the story of him calling the company and asking for “Ventriloquism for Dummies.”
For those who are wondering, here’s Edgar Bergen, Charlie McCarthy, and Mortimer Snerd in the 1939 movie, “You Can’t Cheat an Honest Man”. You definitely get the sense of what Snerd is like! https://youtu.be/xkrzFQc3BgA

There really was a book “Ventriloquism for Dummies”. According to Wiki, it was the least successful of the “For Dummies” series of books.

Ohhhh, there are so many jokes I could tell, but I don’t wanna get in trouble for bringing up a subject we all try to avoid here…!

Did anyone else notice the error in this cartoon? The proper word is “foreword,” not “forward.”

After all the strips with Skeezix’s being tormented by Frank Nelson, we finally get to see Walt do a Jack Benny impersonation!

Actually, if you’ve ever seen Edgar Bergen on TV, you DID see his mouth move. I’ve never considered him a very good ventriloquist.

Tributes to Mortimer Snerd and Jerry Mahoney? Best installment of this strip all year, rerun or not. Kudos!

It was his great humor and development of characters what made him famous. As long as he made audiences laugh they didn’t care.

W.C. Fields: Is it true, Charles, that your father was a gateleg table? Charlie McCarthy: If he was, your father was probably under him!
