Is it normal for pilots in flight to have conversations with anyone beyond air traffic control? Not knowing anything about flying, it would seem odd that Gil would be patched through to the hangar where his plane is kept and talking about his (lack of) love life rather than the tower and his flight status.

Maybe that is the misdirection? He isn’t flying to Beth, he is flying to Paris to meet up with Monique, a character we have never seen before and couldn’t guess was coming.
