I still maintain that if you want to put something out for free and have people actually take it, you should mark it as $5.

Here, you don’t even need the sign. Just put it a the curb and it will disappear.

This strikes me as a profound comment on mankind’s relation to nature: take everything for free. I think the Half Full comics are funny, sweet, and delightfully drawn, and I am pleasantly surprised to see that style also brought to bear in tackling a serious issue.

My aunt owns a small corner store bakery setup. Many years ago she upgraded the fridge. They put the perfectly good fridge on the side of the road with a Free sign. For two weeks no one grabbed it. So they changed the sign to $200, and someone “stole” it that night.

My wife saw this. She is planning on setting me out at the curb next week.

I learned this lesson many years ago when I put out some junk items for trash pickup in my wheelbarrow, clearly marked with my name and “Do Not Take”. The next morning everything was gone before the trash truck came…I still scan yards for that wheelbarrow 25 years later, best one I ever had…sniff, sniff, blubber, blubber.

Funny I should read this immediately after today’s “Strange Brew.”

Whenever we need to dispose of something too big for the regular weekly trash pickup, we’re asked to call the refuse department ahead of time to schedule a visit for the day they do large item pickups. We then put the things out by the street the night before, but almost everything is usually gone before the truck gets here.
