Basketball isn’t football.
His parents are not going to be happy about having to take him to games two or three times a week for four months.
I wouldn’t have known that, either, but it seems like something you should research before applying to be a mascot.

I would have liked it more if he didn’t get it. The “hard work and perseverance brings success” lesson has been done to death.
People also have to know that even with hard work and perseverance, you can still fail at your goal.
