Just wait a few minutes past “it’s too late” and they will re-emerge from the wandering black-key-hole they fell into. It’s an actual proven phenomenon. Just ask anyone who swears “But I put them right there!?”
Yeah, no. What is it with people tossing their keys randomly when coming home? When I carried a lot of keys, they got hung on a hook by the front door when I came in. Nowadays, I only carry two keys (house and car) and they stay in my pocket unless in use. How hard is that?
Anyone in a similar situation should have a back-up set of keys, sez the guy what took an angle grinder to a padlock, on account of not having that back-up set ready and updated.
Only once in my life have I ever said that about myself.
I was working the cash register at a bookstore. A customer approached, wearing a T-shirt imprinted with a single sentence in Greek. I looked up, and recited the sentence in English, surprising the customer and myself.
I do not speak or read Greek, but I recognized a single word that was repeated three times. That was enough to let me understand the whole sentence.
The word was:
λόγος
Can you guess the English translation of the sentence?
We hang our keys on magnets on the side of the refrigerator when we come home. (Sometimes in winter they end up our jacket pockets if we forget to hang them up.) Each have a hook for basic keys – and the ring each has splits in 2 so keys to sheds, garage, etc. can be left hanging when not needing. We each have another hook with our sets of keys to our RV (class B – Chevy van) as not needed unless traveling and they will attach to each of our main set of keys when used.
Our problem is “borrowers” – you remember, from the children’s books. One of us leaves something somewhere definite – such as my office desk scissors are kept in a set place in a set drawer. I went to use them – not there. Looked all over, climbed under our desks – they face each other – not there – looked multiple times. Not there for weeks and upset could not find replacement ones. Opened the drawer one day and there they were sitting exactly where they belonged.
We had to go to the post office today (something we used to do daily to check box for mail, but this was first time going there since mid March 2020 other than some trips in late Sunday nights if we know that something is in our PO box to pick up & that is rare (PO emails if something there). So as long as we were going I rushed to finish our passport renewal paperwork so we could mail Priority mail so traceable. Last night I put the outgoing mail in a plastic zip bag (except for large box which was why we were going). I counted – 3 #10 envelopes, 2- 6×9 envelopes – passports plus the big box. I did so again today before we left the house. When we got to the PO, one passport envelope was missing – and turned up at home upstairs in the scanner! How when it was in the envelope before we left?
This happens all the time. No one in the house but us. We have gotten to the point that if one of us is missing something we ask the borrowers to please return it – and generally within a day or two it is back where it belongs.

What you need is a key fob that beeps when you use the app on your phone. Or a place to put your keys and always use that place.
